Red face Explorer 4.0 Dash Display Problem

Can anyone help with my problem?
Here in the Uk I've just bought a 1999 4.0 Auto Explorer. Great vehicle but has some slight problems; one if which is that the gear selected panel (dark oblong display panel) on the instrument panel doesn't show which gear is selected. In fact this little display is dead at all times. Even when the headlights are switched on at night.
I have the following questions;
This panel should show which gear is selected shouldn't it? Even without the headlights switched on?
Should it show anything else?
Can anyone tell me what the problem is and how to fix it?
I appreciate any help as there are not many Explorer owners here in the UK and getting help is nigh on impossible.

Incidentally to fill my Explorer tank up here in the UK costs £65 (about $115!) What do you think about that

Welcome to FTE Aytee!

The piece that shows the gear selection should be a black piece at the bottom of the instrument cluster. The letters "PRD21" should be in white. Can you see the letters at all - day or night? IF there are not any letters showing, is there a light that illuminates anywhere around that area at night?

No, there's no faint letters visible during either day or night. Also the black oblong is not illuminated at night (with dash lights on). In fact the display looks just like a piece of black, slightly textured plastic in bright daylight.
Perhaps that's what it is? I'm not sure if the gears are supposed to display on the dash on the UK model. My Explorer seems to be made in Australia; at least that's the area shown in the overhead compass calibration diagram in the manual!
Perhaps I should try to find other UK Explorer owners and check with them?

I'm not sure on the UK or Australian models, but it seems logical they would all have the logos there for which gear you are in. You might want to stop by a dealer and ask them about it, or look at another Explorer on their lot (if they have one).

My manual trans explorer has the same display (or lack of). There is no display for gear selection on the instrument cluster for a manual tranny. Perhaps the instrument panel was replaced and a "manual tranny" version was installed?? Just my 2-cents worth!!

@memphisfordguy:
Could be, could be ,I'll have to check that out.

@CobraXP:
Don't see too many Explorers in UK. I'll have to keep my eyes open for one sitting on a forecourt and have a look at it. With my luck it'll probably be cheaper and better than the one I just bought

Thanks both for your help.
