Petrol (Gas) is very expensive here in the UK, it's about £3.60 ($5+) per gallon.
This is quite expensive in my 4.0 Auto as you might imagine. Anyway I enquired about converting it to Liquid Petroleum Gas (LPG), which is half the price, but was told that as the Explorer has a plastic(?) manifold it is not a good idea to convert as they blow up! Does anyone know if this is true?
Of course I had to endure the classic 'Ford Exploder' joke from the guy at the conversion place
Fords have tendency to backfire when starting on propane (I should say some Fords) There is a computer fix that eliminates this problem but I know of one owner that had a backfire which destroyed his plastic aircleaner. I'd go to another shop where your business would be valued. I run propane on 4 vehicles and have absolutely no problems and enjoy the benefits of a longer lasting engine and lower fuel costs.
I've got an 1999 Explorer with integrated LPG. Also here in Germany you just can effort to drive such an engine only if you have lpg on board...
1 liter normal Gas is about 1,10 Euro (U$ 1,3)! One liter lpg is about 0,52 Euro!!!
Please have a look to www:exploristen.de - there are a lot of details about
the lpg intergration with pictures...
I do not feel any difference by driving with lpg.
I've heard that you can order an lpg-Explorer direct from FORD in US, is that true? Here in Germany we have to rebuild the cars by a spacial garage/dealer -
Prize 2.500,-- Euros.
