What to do?

I'm a very new member here and I'd like to say this is a cool site! I have an 86 f-250 with a 460, 4 speed, 4x4. I just moved to Montana from Nevada. I have a Edelbrock carb and intake , Hedman headers, true dual exhaust and Mallory distributor planned. My problem is, when I moved here, I burned 4 quarts of oil in just 952 miles! The motor has 131,000 miles on it, and I was towing a car. Is this normal or is it a sign of evil? I never took it over 60 mph and I change my oil every 2500 miles or so. It runs a little rough, but that's just the carb in need of tuning. Should I put these upgrades on now, or should I try to find a donor 460 and build it up and then put these parts on?
I'm pulling my smog pump and EGR off when I do these swaps, but as I see it, these do no good right now because when I let off the gas, you can get very sleepy with all the fumes pouring out of the tail pipe and into the cab! I know my carb needs adjusting, it's the original Holley 4bbl, so is that the problem, or is my smog stuff failing me?

I would do a compression test on your motor and then compare to factory . Your carb probaly needs a good rebuild .

sounds good

i've come to the conclusion that it's probably time for an engine overhaul, but at only 131,000 miles? I don't know how it was driven before i got it, but it's in really good shape, (i've only owned it a year). Don't these 460's last longer than that in general?

All engines will get alot of miles without burning oil if theyre taken care of.
The compression check is a good place to start. You can buy a tester at the auto parts...low $.

Thanks

thanks for the advise.
I just remembered that before I left Nevada, I changed my oil and put in 10W30, not 10W40. Could that be what caused my engine to develop a drinking problem? I put 10W40 in it up to that point and I thought that the 10W30 is getting too thin as it warms up....is this possible?

yup, 11-12 mpg is real good for this engine! I get better mpg in my truck than I do in my 72 Pontiac Ventura, it only gets 9-10 mpg!

From: Sarnia, Ontario, CANADA!
We have a 1988 Ford F Super Duty at work that has a Fuel injected 460. It seems to just burn the oil. It does have an oil leak but not that bad. We got through 1-2 quarts of oil a day! That is driving around town carrying a lot of weight and towing a brush chipper. But for sure less than 50 miles a day. Kinda sucks. You can see the smoke coming out when you rev it a bit late when shifting. Funny thing is that the truck passed an emissions test last year with this problem!

I think the 460's have a bad rep of burning oil. Too bad!

Thanks Beast12

Thanks for the info! I think that since I was towing a car almost 1000 miles in some pretty nasty uphill sections it was a little thirsty for oil.
The truck runs great and the most oil I burned before this trip was about a quart every other week. It's still got me a little worried though. I'll just keep my eye on it to make sure.
