Really glad to find this message board. I got a used 89 e150, and it is truely a gift. I have two rescue great danes, and this van is the only thing that can carry 2 humans and 2 Danes in comfort. The older dog has lost a toe due to cancer, and he has a hard time "jumping" up into a normal suv, so the e150 is a great rig for older dogs.
The first problem is the temp guage...I saw it work for about a minute, but it hasn't worked in a while...loose wire? I'm not really sure where to look, so thanks very much in advance.
More likely a bad sending unit, there are two of them so go ahead and replace them both. I would stay away from the wells stuff that autozone carries, try to get a napa part or ford. They are a bit more expensive but they will give a better reading and last longer. You may just want to install a mechanical gauge though, as it will be more accurate.
When you go to Napa or Ford, tell them you need a "Temperature sending unit" for the gauge, they will then ask you details like what year, model, and engine size. The mechanical gauge will be about 30 dollars and you'll need to drill a hole in the firewall (bulkhead) to get run the line, and find a power tap for the back light.
