I read in one of the post that the outo trans was six speed. Well got my ford shop manuals today and sure enough the auto trans is a six speed tranny, it skips forth gear under light loads, thats why it's called A five speed.
now, call me looney, but i am CERTAIN i have felt five shifts many, many times...you all can check as well, just leave from a stop a little harder than normal, and cruise to about 60 mph or so.....that would seem to show six forward speeds being used, and in another post we hear they only use five on upshift, and five on downshift, but downshifting it uses fourth gear which is not used on up shifting.....im cornfused.;...
go try it out, lemme know if you see the same thing!
but, keep in mind, fourth and fifth gear ratios are VERY close, and only causes a ~200-300 rpm difference, and the shift is only noticed by listening, and watching the tach.
According to the dieselmann:
"The 5R110W, or TorqShift, automatic transmission is a redesign of the E40D/4R100. Basically, the gear ratio for first gear was lowered from 2.71 : 1 to 3.09 : 1. To get second gear the overdrive clutch is engaged to give a ratio of 2.2 : 1. Third gear is now the same ratio as the old second gear, 1.54 : 1. The TorqShift is advertised as being a 5 speed automatic, when actually it has six forward speeds. On cold engine operation (below 0 degrees) the overdrive clutch is engaged in third gear for a ratio of 1.09 : 1. The transmission will shift directly to sixth from fourth and fifth is skipped. On a warm engine the shift pattern would be 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 5th (direct drive), 6th."
Not to change the subject, but i heard that the torque shift tranny was made by allison. This came from a diesel mechanic of 30 years. Anyone else know of this.
I also was told if they did put an allison / torque shift in these trucks, that allison tranny's were always over kill. I know for an auto tranny on a big truck made by allison it used to be an extra 20 to 40 G, and when the truck was completely wore out the tranny could be pulled and used in another new truck wih no probs.
No it's not an allison, built by ford at a ford plant. I think this tranny is so bullet proof everone wants to label it an allison. Just be glad it is't, GM is having trouble with there allisons.
When the Duramax first came out people with modded trucks were having problems with the Allison going into "safe mode" because of the extra power. They are good transmissions, but they are no the "end all be all" in light duty truck transmissions. I've driven 2 2004 Duramax/Allison combos and the Allison has nothing on the Torqshift.
