Red Die diesel

I saw a sign at a truck stop that said red die deisel was 199 a gallon. The other stuff was 2.39. What is the difference, and can I use red? Thanks

NO, it's off road use only. In MN red is $1.38 and #2 is $1.68

Oh ok. Does it not have any additives in it or something? or does it polute more? Will it affect the way the truck runs or is it just a smog thing? Thanks
BTW, how much trouble can you get in for running it?

The only additive is the red dye to differentiate it from regular diesel. It's not taxed, so the price is lower. It's dyed red to make it easy for the authorities to catch those that use it on the street. The fine for using it is $10,000. You'd have to save a lot on fuel for a long time to make it up. Don't even think about it, it ain't worth the risk.

Cost of dyed diesel for 30 gallons at $1.99, $59.70
Cost of regular #2 diesel for 30 gallons at $2.39, $71.70
Cost of getting caught with $30 gallons of dyed fuel, priceless!!!

That would average $325.23 per gallon.

Would be nice to be able to use the off road stuff or home heating oil, but the risk of a fine just isn't worth it.

Chances are you won't get pulled over, but I wouldn't recommend running with the red stuff.

I'd be kinda surprised if the filling station let you fill up a street vehicle with it at all.

The authorities have been known to inspect trucks at cattle auctions, rodeos, etc., looking for rigs with dyed fuel. They don't routinely stop rigs on the street to inspect the fuel tanks.

The fine is detailed in Internal Revenue Code, Title 26, Section 6714.

The fine for a first violation is the GREATER of $1,000 or $10 for each gallon.

On subsequent violations the fine can be multiplied by the number of the offense, i.e. the fine is doubled for the second offense, tripled for the third, etc.

Individual states may also have their own penalty. My state specifies a civil penalty of $100 for the first offense.

Geesh! The system here says I need just one more post before I can email you and tell you what a great job you do here Quadzilla. I can't count the times since I've had my diesel that I've benefitted from your experience and advice. Thank you from Montana!

Depending on the state fines (most of which are substantially higher than my state) most people would get nailed somewhere between your original estimate and mine.

Personally I've never had much luck getting away with things so your advice is good.

I suspect all that red smoke coming out that big tailpipe would make it even harder to pull off...

No one mentioned that the dye is also hard to get out. If you fill up with a tank today they can still detect it even though you have filled up since then with the un dyed fuel. In my state they usually pull over and chech trucks pulling trailers orat sale barn and places like that. I have not seen them just pull over any diesel truck on the highway to check yet. With prices going up though I expect to see more inspections.

This is just your state statue, the offense is also a federal offense which is where the universial $10,000 fine comes into play and/or the 3/5/10 years in the pen.

By law it is made to specific concentrations of red that make it very difficult to dilute to undetectable levels. This feature of it has been known to cause difficulty in the aviation industry where the residual red dye has shown up in jet fuel. Pilots are accustomed to testing their fuel prior to takeoff and the residual red has caused pilots to reject the fuel.

I suspect even one tank of it would turn your fuel filter permanently red which would make it pretty obvious to any mechanic that works in that area as well.
