Talking Transmission Leaking. AOD

I have an AOD in my 1970 Bronco. The shift shaft has a small amount of play (up and down) and is dripping slightly. Is this a seal gone bad or bad shaft? What is involved to replace the seal around the shift shaft. I love this web site. Any help is greatly appreciated.

I had the same problem with my AOD. To replace the seal you must drop the pan and valve body. Next there is a pin you must pull out of the case to release the shaft. The large nut on the inside and the small nut on the TV lever must be removed. Then the shaft will come out and you can pry the seal out.

I greatly appreciate your response. Does the pressure of the transmission have to be reset?

Not normally but its a good idea to. Just make sure you pay attention to how the linkage is inside and out of the trans and put it back the same way. Sometimes there is a small spring on the TV shaft inside the trans; I usually just leave it out.

Thanks again for your help. I had a shift kit installed with the A+ servo and now I wonder why the Tranny shop didn't take care of this seal while they had the pan off. Not sure if I want to tackle the job myself. But as the saying goes, if you want it done right, you have to do it yourself. I know nothing about transmissions. That's what makes this site so invaluable, with people like yourself, that are so filled with knowledge. Thanks again!

I'm not so filled, just screwed up a enough times to know what not to do. It's a pretty messy job, about 10qt. of trans. fluid comes out (it will drip forever).

Well, to do it right you have to hook a gauge up to the TV pressure port on the passenger side of the case. Then with the spacer block in the TV cable you move the cable housing till the gauge reads 33psi. After you remove the spacer the pressure should be under 5psi. But I just get it close and fine-tune it by shift feel and timing.
