Cats on Powerstrokes
Are you required to smog it every other year, just like a gasser?
And has anyone in CA,(The most **** state around), taken there's off?
How does it run, sound?
I can't stop making modifications to a truck that hasn't arrived from the factory yet.

The early '99's (made in 98) came with Cats if I'm not mistaken. My dad's was made in March '99 with no cats, but It has the place the cat would bolt up.
California is the most **** state when it comes to emmissions. My uncle used to live there and when he went, he took his Big V-8 (can't recall) '64 Wagoneer with him. They made him take it to an exhaust shop and put 2 cats on it to pass it. :-X23 :-X23 Bad California!"Smog inspections are required for all vehicles except diesel powered vehicles, motorcycles, or 1973 and older year models."
So in short, you don't have to smog your diesel. Ever. But technically, if your truck came with a cat, you can't remove it, because that would be considered tampering with the emissions equipment. But who's going to know, if you don't have to smog it?
The cat on the 2002 diesels is pretty large, and the stock pipe is 3.25 inches, so unless you plan to put a high HP chip in your truck, you might as well keep it. If you plan to install a high HP chip, then it would benefit to have the cat removed and install a larger exhaust system. Tests show that anything above a 3.5 inch system won't do anything for a stock engine as far as increasing power.
I had a full 4" exhaust with muffler and no cat (took it off because of crappy construction, now looking for a new one). The exhaust itself didn't really affect performance. But a 4" flows 50% more than a 3.25", which lowers EGTs from the chip. It sounds more gutsy, but I don't know if that's from the removal of the cat, or the larger pipe.

San Diego huh, that's where I am. You said they are on trucks with manuals. Is that only manuals, or automatics also. And why are there no pictures of your truck available, sounds nice.
I'll break out my digital camera and take some pics of my truck tomorrow since it's supposed to be a nice sunny day.
