APA here, Every monday night for the past 6 years. Its really only sloppy when you are shooting with beginners. It takes alot of skill to shoot APA with someone thats ranked higher. They'll safe you to death. hehe... Enjoy it, its a great league..
I start for the first time in June. I don't even know what I'm ranked yet. I'm guessing about a 2-3. I've recently been watching the playoffs for the league I'm joining, and I played a 6 and got whipped! It'll be interesting to go from leisure to competition.
In Maryland all newbies come in as 4's. Your ranking will go up or down depending on how you play. As for the competition thing, stay relaxed, and don't let yourself get stessed. Just a few tips since I won't be shooting you. Take your time, walk the table, think before you shoot. Always practice with someone alot better than you. When you get to their level, again, find someone that shoots better than you. If you practice with a buddy that isn't any good your game will never improve.
