How do you remove carpet

I know this might be pushing the limits of "garage and workshop", but it is kind of like a workshop and you guys are pretty knowledgeable here.
I have an 11x11 bedroom and was wondering how hard it would be to remove the carpet. I plan on using the bedroom as a workout room with a weight bench and don't want to ruin the carpet since it is new. Is it possible to remove the carpet without damaging it and then re-install it in a few years(or more) if I decide to sell the house and move?
thanks

It should not be too hard to remove, the biggest part is re-installing it later. If you want to do this, you will need to take your time pulling it up and make sure it does not rip. Also, when re-installing use new padding under the carpet, it will make it more "fresh".

With a room that size you might be able to start at one corner and gently pry it off of the tack strip. Then slowly work your way down each length and try to pull the carpet edge toward the closest wall as you pull up. That should reduce the chances of fraying the edges with the tack strips. If there is a seam in the room then I would start with trying to seperate the seam and then tackle the outside edges. If you're careful enough you might be able to salvage the under padding as well, assuming there is underpadding and it's not put down with adhesive.

Carpet is very easily removed, just pull it up from the tack strips as noted above (unless it's a glue down type). However, I'd think twice about doing it for a couple reasons.....feel, comfort, looks, noise, etc. An 11x11 room is very small and it wouldn't cost much to recarpet. IF you do pull it up, apply some concrete sealer (presuming you're on slab) to the floor as concrete is porous and can wick moisture.

If your only concern is preserving the carpet in that room, why not cover it up with a throw rug?

Personally, I don't see how you're going to ruin it with workout equipment, unless you're dragging it all around, the base of the equipment will do no more damage than furniture does.

If you have a door near the corner of the room, start there. There will be a trim edge across the doorway (assuming the carpet does not continue uninterrupted out the door) that you have to pry up anyway. It will give you a good handhold to start tuggin the carpet up. Try to pull the carpet up from the tackstrips - not along or straight into the room.

When it comes time to reinstall the carpet, you can rent a kicker (a knee-er, really) for the job. If you generally buy all your flooring at a local shop, they may even loan it to you for the weekend. I think Home Depot rents them out, too. Don't be surprised if you have to trim the carpet edges when you reinstall it - it does stretch over time.

Cheers,
Eric

I hope I'm not to late to jump in on the carpet removal. Try this instead. How about putting som 3/4" or 1" plywood down directly over the carpet? Not the chipboard but the real plywood. My cousin did this in a work-shop he had in a house he was renting. The wood came up easy enough and all we had to do was vacuum when he moved.

Thats kind of the set up I have now. I have 4x8 3/4 inch boards with the cheapest carpet I could find layed on top and stapled to it. I thought it would be easy to peel off the carpet and store it somewhere until I needed it again.
