That loud click is probably the sound of your electromagnetic clutch engaging the compressor. You can confirm this by running the engine and your A/C while watching the compressor with the hood up. I believe you'll find that this sound is coming from the front of the compressor at the pulley (where the clutch is). Being somewhat loud is not that unusual, if it's not cycling you usually don't notice because it only happens when you turn the A/C on, or if you've left it on, while your cranking the engine. I suspect you're still low on freon (you mentioned adding some and some additives). Do you have any guages to check the pressure?

Question

I am trying to recharge the AC on my '92. I was retrofitted for R-134a (did I get the number right?). The new fitting for the new refrigerant was leaking and it lost all of it's charge. I added some stop leak/leak detector/seal conditioner before I discovered that the fitting was leaking. Before adding the leak detector the compressor would not come on at all. After adding it the compressor began cycling about every 30 seconds and would stay on for about one or two seconds. I then added a can of refrigerant and now it cycles about every 10 seconds and stays on for about five or six seconds. So far I have seen no red leak detector dye anywhere so I think my only leak may be the fitting. So, my question is: does the system need to be evacuated since it lost all of it's charge or can I just add more refrigerant until the compressor cycles normally? It seems, at this point, that it is close to working properly. Also, should I expect to find a replacement fitting at an auto parts store or do I have to go to Ford?

Yes it should be evacuated. It may have gone all the way to atmospheric pressure. You may also need to replace the accumulator (reciever / Dryer) as it could have picked up moisture during this time period. Since you'll be pulling everything down, you should go ahead and replace the fitting thats leaking.

My brother & I were servicing my a/c, and we saw the compressor wheel spinning on each click. But here's where I got puzzled:
I bought a pressure gauge also along with the combo can of leak stop/oil charge/R134A so I could have on hand for current & future situations. So, I got a warm cloth wrapped around the can(to prevent the can from freezing during installation) and installed the entire contents. The gauge was in the green, it was cooling really good inside my X. The clickngnoise quieted down so low, we had to pop the hood and monitor it wthe A/C on to make sure it was still working. So, I was satisfied 100%. And everythnig ran fine for about a month. Then my A/C would only cool during driving and would go completely warm/outside temp air when at stops. So, I put the gauge on again and it was all the way in the Red. So, I released a little out in short bursts as the gauge needle went back over to the green again. And now its not cooling at all.

You need to get a set of full guages and check both the high and low side. Could be a blockage in the system or a compressor problem, or non-condensables in the system, or a few other things. First stage of diagnosis is to see both the high and low pressure readings.

explorer "chirp"

My 04 Explorer has a bad "chirp" when the air compressor cycles, about every
10-15 seconds. My local dealership is about to pull their hair out trying to locate what the problem is. Fan clutch, belt tensioner, belt, evaporator core, and several other items have been changed out, some even twice, and I still have that annoying chirp. From what threads I have read on this site as well as several others, it appears only that V8 engines are having this problem.
Anyone got this problem fixed yet????.....

Thanks....Bill

All the parts checked make sense except the evaporator core. I would suspect the orifice or condenser (high side items) before the evaporator. Also, wonder about the shimming of the clutch. And lastly, have you tried a different brand of belt. Sometimes it can make a difference.

04 Explorer a/c

The clutch has been changed out, as well as a thinner "shimmy" or washer behind the clutch. I have had the belt changed 3 times...all still under warranty, so still running a Factory Ford part. THanks...Bill
