i have head number as follows....D3TE 0425 AIA..found on the head..
i also have these..D2TE 9430AA... found on the manifold..
Any help would be wonderful....
sounds like FE numbers, but I don't have them memorized. cast numbers aside, how many bolts holding down the valve covers? If 5 then it's an FE (360,390,406,410,427 or 428). Determining the actual displacement after that can be a challenge. Externally, the FEs look the same.
If the motor has the intake manifold extending about an inch under the valve covers and the plugs are angled like \\ //, then that motor is of the FE engine family (could be a 352 to a 428).
If the motor is fairly large across the top, the valve covers are flat then you possibly have a "385" series motor.
Gtex......are you sure that if there is only five bolts on the valve covers, that it is a 428? See, we know it is either a 428 or a 429. But not sure which. I have had two mechanics tell me two differnt things. And I am trying to find out which it is.. If it is a FE, does that mean it would be a 428 and not a 429?
how do you know for sure its either a 428 or 429, they look pretty different, plus a 360 looks just like a 428 so without knowing internals you could have a 360, and if it was a 385 series it could be a 429 or 460, they look pretty much the same and again you wouldnt know without looking at the internals.

Welcome to FTE Lady Rebecca!!! 5 vavle cover bolts means it is in the FE family. This doesn't necessarily mean it is a 428. If we do determine that it is an FE then we can go about making sure it is a 428. Just look at the spark plugs as mentioned above. This is the easiest way to tell if it is an FE or not.
Rebecca,
The FE motors all look alike for the most part. They are often labeled as 390s or 428s when it comes time to sell. When, it could easily be one of the smaller FE motors.
Assuming "Ladyrebecca" is indeed a Lady. Would she be the first to venture into the FE Forum... Doesn't seem likely, but I can't recall any other feminine types. If there were some, we must have run them off....

Might be good addition to the team :-)
if ladyrebecca is a female, she would be the first on the FE forumn that i recall, she can sure join our team, its nice to see a lady that likes to get her hands dirty, special on old FE's.
The man I bought this motor from claims it is a 428.....But the man I am selling it to claims it is a 429. So all we are trying to do is ID the motor. Thats why we know it is either a 428 or 429. Is there away to tell them apart and know foresure which it is?
Lady R:
What we are after are the identifying marks of the motor. A 428 and a 429 are from two different engine families, so they are visibly different. If you are standing next to the motor, a 428 will have the spark plugs angled like \\ // and there will be five valve cover bolts, these are caracteristics of the "FE" engine family. The other concern within the family is that the motor can be anywhere from a 352 to a 428 as they look similar from the outside, the true test is what crank is in the motor.
As far as the 429 is concerned, that motor will look similar to a 460, as they are in the same engine family of the "385" series. These tend to be rather wide and look pretty flat across the top of the motor.
Based on appearance, tell us which catagory your motor falls into, then if you really want to know what the displacement is, we will have to dig into the insides of the engine.
I am getting very leary about this being a 428. All of the casting numbers you have posted are from 1972 which was a few years after 428 production stopped. I am thinking you have a truck 360 or 390.
