I decided to go with an original Flowmaster 40 muffler. I had it installed yesterday and kept the stock pipes on my 5.4L V8. In neutral, when I put the petal to the floor the sound is MORE than I could have asked for. It sounds VERY powerful and reminds me of a race truck.
The only thing I'm concerned about is when I'm driving. I can hear the low rumble when giving it a little gas and the RPMs are between 1500 and 2000, however anything over that and I cannot hear it at all.
Is this just because I'm so far away from where the exhaust exits? Or is it actually a lot quieter?
I have not had a friend do a drive-by in it yet, but I think I will be soon.
Had a FlowMaster installed 3 days ago on my 2004 Explorer XLT Sport with the 4.6L V8 - after my wife did a drive-by (no shooting!), I think it sounds good at any speed. It definitely sounds quieter with me driving.
I recall when i put the FM 40 on my 90 F-150 5.0...back then I just put on the one muffler SI/SO it sounded good when i reved it up, and giving it some gas, runing through the gears, but like you when I gased it up over 2 grand, i couldnt hear it much, well more of the 'exhaust' coming out....like air......since FM is a high flow muffler you get that....if you remove one of two of ur cats with high flow, it would make a big difference on the sound factor, at any rpm....hope this helps
p.s. If you have no one to do a drive by (no shooting, of course) just stick your head out the window going down the road....lmfao i did that while my friend was driving...of course i have turndowns so i get the full effect....but if you want the FULL EFFECT....i reccommend sitting in the bed while someone drives down the road
The original flowmaster 40 series resonates in the interior. You are gonna hear your exhaust more in the interior than you are with 50 series. The way your truck is tuned is to give more power at the low end rpm's then the top end. Thats why you hear more of your exhaust when its in that lower rpm range.
Thanks for the replies guys. I don't really want to remove anything that would affect emmissions or void out my warrenty (it's a 2003 and I still have a 3.5 yrs left on it).
Would the tip make much of a difference? I hear people saying that turn downs help more because you have the sound coming out of it then echoing off the ground. I currently only have a 8" long 3.5" wide slash cut tip on it.
if you want to hear it inside your cab, then turndowns are the way to go..thats what i have on mine...gets kinda annoying after awhile...but it sounds really good to me. High flow cats shouldnt void your warranty, but i dunno.
I'm sorry, I confused the high flow cats with something else. The reason I don't want to put anything bigger than my 2.5" pipe is because I don't want to lose power. After speaking with a guy who went with a single 3" he lost a lot of low-end torque.
Right now the noise in the cab is a non-issue, basically with the windows up and the AC going (as everyone needs here in Phoenix, AZ) I can barely hear the exhaust anyway.
One way to reall hear the exaust is to get a 4"x 24"long tip (turndown or straight) it will enhance the low notes and really make it sound good and loud.
Some big tips would make it sound good...but im a big fan of turndowns..make it sound like an old school muscle car, if you do it right....what sound are you lookin for? somethin bad a$$ or jsut somethin other than stock? let us know dude....
everybody says that the original 40 resonates in the cab somewhat bad. i wanna know what u guys are running to do that. no cats with 40's or something? im saying this cuz i put a si/do FM 40 on my 95, only have one cat, and u can hardly hear it in the cab. it runs out the back thru 18x3.5" tips. good sounding muffler anyhow. i love the signature FM sound!
hey Rice...whats up man....well im running two pipes after the stock "y-pipe" an going into two FM 40's, no catz and an x pipe, turndowns....love the sound...does get loud...but im used to it by now....anything that i ride in thats quiet, i go nuts lol...im like its soo freggin quiet!....it doesnt really resonate that bad, considering i have turndowns...i guess if u put it out the back, it wouldnt be as loud...hope that helps dude...
So what is everybodies opinion on dual outs for a V6 03 Ranger level 2? I want bad *** sound but i don't know know if i get more out of a dual or single catback exhaust! But then i don't know if i shouldn't just go with the mufflers only! I wouldn't mind knowing what an aftermarket exhaust on my ranger would sound when it drives by lol

I agree with you their, every one says that the 40 series is so loud and iv heard a few of them and they are fairly quite and little interior noise.. I do like the sound but i dont see were they are overly loud like some people say..then again im use to farm pickups with 18inch glass packs so maybe it just seems quiet to me..
