I'm new to Diesels. I was told I should get an EGT gauge even if I don't chip my engine. Why didn't Ford install one? How hard are they to install, where do they go and what do they do? I'm thinking about getting the Superchip Micro-Tuner chip. My dealer tells me he sees a lot of internal engine failures due to an "over fuel condition" after running a chip over 60,000 miles? Any comments?
An EGT gauge can help save your engine from melting if you keep an eye on it. Even stock you can hit the limit(1250*F) Pre turbo, I have when towing uphill. If you are going to chip your truck you will definitely need the gauge as you will come up on 1250*F quickly. You can click on my pics at the botom of my post to see my gauge and mounting location. I chose the pre turbo mount in the pipe after the exhaust manifold using a clamp-on pyro(no welding or tapping threads). There are many arguements as to which mounting location is better(pre or post turbo) but I chose pre turbo to monitor how hot the gasses are exiting the engine so I have a good idea when to get out of the throttle.
Ford didn't give you an EGT gauge for 2 reasons: (1) they figured most people wouldn't know how to read it or what it means and (2) the fuel mapping (horse power rating) from the factory is not high enough to require monitoring exhaust gas temps. As I understand it, if the exhaust temps get high enough and stay that way long enough, it will straighten the blades on the driven side of the turbocharger. If you chip it, you still probably wouldn't need an EGT gauge unless you are pulling a trailer.
Joe can you please explain. Do you put the EGR probe before or after the turbo? Where would you place it? At what temp do you need be be concerned? I guess at the high end temp you need to lower your speed or stop and let the engine cool down? What is the normal running temp? I know nothing abour exhaust gas temps. Thanks for your help.
It makes sence to me to put the EGT sensor ahead of the turbine. As to actual temps, I can't find any actual numbers. We haven't had any failures at the plant due to over heating. Maybe Ken Payne will respond to your questions to give you more specific information.
Let's see if I have this straight. I can use a clamp on probe between the exhaust manifold and the turbo. Where can I purchase one of those guys? Also do I need a Boost Gauge? Better yet, what's a Boost Gauge?
I'm sorry it was item # 4. Temps for the PSD that Joe said you might have. By the way, how much boost should you get form a boost gauge? I did find the info on the gauges. All this because I want to chip my PSD. Thanks for the help.
just a thougt I was able to hit 1300 with a bone stock empty truck, i even was able to get it to 1300 towing, had to back out of it both times.
now with some intake nods, ex mods, and a chip I have egts that are tough to hit 1200 towing, abd thats with 288rwhp, 650ftlbs tq.
I also can pull 30 psi boost if necassery, but usually its not over 20
