Question How do I check my engine temp?

A couple of weeks ago someone mentioned using a meat/candy thermometer to get an actual temp reading.

Is that trick for checking water temp, as in taking the radiator cap off and dipping in the coolant, or is their a better way? Thanks.

that sounds hot and dangerous. I'd stick with the old fashion "sending unit in the intake manifold" trick

I used the meat termometer method just the other day to check and see if my thermostat was opening properly. Do this in the morning when the engine is completely cool. Before you start the motor, take off the radiator cap and put the meat thermometer in, then start the motor and wait. When the engine temp reaches 180 or whatever your t-stat is rated for, the thermostat will open and the temp in the radiator will rise to that temp. You should also notice the water moving in the radiator when the t-stat opens, if the water doesn't flow and the temp climbs to over 200 you may need to change your thermostat. This method helped me diagnose a malfuntioning thermostat.

Thanks green, That's what I tell people myself.
It is the safer way of doing it.
