Diesel Oil

Is there a system (an understnadable one, hopefully) to the rating of oil? What do CH, CJ and their associated numbers stand for? For example, if the owner's manual suggest or requires CH, is their an oil that would be even better? Or is that even germane? perhaps one oil is not better than another just different?

Diesel Oil

Well, I just changed out the Mobil 1 for Rotella T. Had a hard time locating it. Neither Pep Boys, Advance Auto or VIP Auto Parts had any diesel oil. Wally Mart came through with three or four different kinds including Rotella synthetic. Still would like to know the secret behind the codes, though What do CJ, CF etc stand for?

Diesel Oil

A bit late but before I found these forums I put the Quaker State semi-synth for 4x4's in my motor, not knowing that diesels used a different oil. Nothing happened & the oil was spotless when it was changed at 3000 miles. I even put the old oil into my old minivan! The minivan just got it's oil changed last week & the oil still looked OK. I'm kinda cheap but I wouldn't keep the oil in my minivan after 6000 miles of use!:P
I don't tow or put any hard stress on my truck so that might be a factor. I wish I had something to tow but it's just for looks right now!

I guess the issue is the anti-foam ingredients since the Powerstroke uses the motor oil to power the injection pump. In any case, i took the Mobil 1 out early and replaced it with Rotella. On the next change i will try the Rotella synthetic. I realize that synthetics may be more expensive and may be unnecessary in our applications but I also want as much protection and mileage as I can get. If I can afford a new Powerstroke, I can afford the oil.

Diesel rated oils not only have more anti-foam additive, but more anti-wear (zinc and phosphorus) additive and a higher TBN (total base number) to neutralize the sulfuric acid from the diesel fuel, as well as more dispersants to hold the soot in suspension. This superior additive package is why I run Chevron Delo in my gasoline engines. The only downside in doing that is some of these additives leave more ash deposits behind when they burn and may shorten the life of catalytic converters.

Synthetic diesel oils are for better cold weather starting. They are very new. The trick was to get a synthetic to handle the soot and, therefore prevent ring sticking. The problem is that synthetic molecules are of a shape that flows easily, but does not hold on to dirt particles like the irregular shaped dino oil molecules.

CH-4 means: "C" for compression ignition (diesels), "H" is the newest (A,B,C, etc.), and "4" for 4-stroke. "S" is for spark igintion. Europe and Japan have completely different systems, of course.
