i was wondering if any one has put a 400 into a car for a street/drag car. i have one in my possesion and a have a mustang with a 302 with a broken crank. so i was thinking of building up the 400 and making one hell of a street car, because looking at the dyno numbers these enginges can get impressinve. i was just wondering on peoples opinions on the 400 vs. 351W in a car. 2,200lbs(car weight)
My son kept talking about a 460 for the truck. I talked him out of it for two reasons. One- I own two 400's. Two- The 400 has the longest stroke of any Ford factory pushrod valve engine ever built.
CAUTIONS: Some blocks experienced cracking problems.
The 400 has a big block bell housing bolt pattern which may create a problem with your Mustang transmission.
Oil starving in number 4 and 5 mains due to oil routing from the number 1 main to the camshaft galleries.
All problems can be overcome. I want the 400 for it's torque in a 4X4.
I just saw a Mustang with a blown 351W that was dyno'ed at 1300 horsepower. You can get a lot from a Windsor for less money than you can from a 400. 460 powered 'stangs are common and also less expensive to build than a 400.
You can get moderate power easily and cheaply from a 400, but to get enough power to be a competetive drag car, you will need a lot of expensive custom made parts.
He is absolutely correct. Moderate power = cheap & easy. Big power = BIG FREAKIN BUCKS!!! I have a 400 FMX block going into my 1973 XA Falcon coupe (Aussie Ford now living in Florida). I have a custom Eagle crank, one-off Ross pistons, one-off set of Oliver rods, FPP 4145 intake, Demon carb, DUI dizzy, heavily modified closed chamber 4V heads, and a custom ground cam. Motor still has not made it to the dyno room but we are estimating 500-550 hp and 575-600+ lbs-ft of torque. This is NOT a drag motor, it's going to be my 2-3x per week daily driver with P/S, A/C, Tremec TKO. Cost on the motor alone is $10K. If you want to drag race a Mustang, put the money into a Windsor or get a 2nd & 3rd job.
ok so i decided to go with the 351W beause i don't have 10K to drop on a motor. so what do you think about this set-up
AFR 205race heads
edelbrock Victor jr. intake
holley 750cfm carb (model 4160)
3.85 scat crank
Kieth Black 302 forged pistons(are these really forged or are they just the new hypereutectic mix? can find them at flatlanderracing.com under the 302 pistons)
and i'm keeping the short stroke because from what i read NOS is saffer with a shorter stroke. this is why i also need to know if those pistons are really forged not just a new hypereutectic mix.

Well, can't help you much here as I don't speak Windsor very well. Best bet would be to try a Windsor Forum, especially one of hundreds of forums dedicated to late model Mustangs. There are a lot of very knowledgable racers hanging out on some of those boards. Good luck, you should have one helluva 392 stroker motor there.
