i've been looking at these cone style collector inserts in the summit catalog, yes i know they are for race and claim atleast 8db reduction in sound. the reason i'm looking at them is i have long tube headers that come out right infront of my tranny pan and i'm going to a deep pan soon so there won't really be any place to route the pipes with the transfer case and all. now the other kicker is i'm wicked cheap. so i got to thinking what about a steel wool pad in a turn down or acouple of pieces of screen door screen rolled up on each other? do you think i'd get any kind of decent noise reduction? or is this just the stupidest idea i've come up with in a while?
No, that's not stupid, it's called "innovation".... You could probably get some sound reduction that way, but not much. Those (Dynatech?) cones are relatively expensive anyway.
Summit lists a boatload of pipeing turns and parts; maybe you could figure a way to route pipes around the trans pan, and install mufflers...?
Maybe a "Y" pipe routed to the passenger side into a single exhaust and muffler?

just got the pan today and its looking like the pan and the headers might actually hit so i may have the exhaust shop turn them into shorties but i'm still debating trying this idea because i'm mud race over memorial day and i was hoping for all the extra power possible....another question..does running open headers for a road trip make it more likely to burn valves or do i have anything to worry about decides my hearing?
No, running open headers won't hurt the valves, even for an extended trip. (You shouldn't run an engine without any header pipe at all, however). As you say, your eardrums will be in bad shape, though.. You might also get the attention of the muffler police......
Maybe a good exhaust shop could bend and re-route the headers to clear the pan......? A shop that works with exhaust systems everyday might have some ideas, or they might have run into the same problem before.....
