hi i dont know if this is where i post this im new at this, but i have a question. My truck has been running with black smoke coming out of the tail pipe for a little while now and it is running very rough and backfiring. It wouldnt idle so i brought the idle up a little bit on the carb. it idled a little better but still ruff. i was told it was my spark plug wires and fuel filter so i replaced those. it didnt help. i have stopped at many mechanic shops around and they have know idea what is wrong. Now i was driving it this weak and all of a sudden white smoke is coming out of the tail pipe. So i have stopped driving it. This truck is a 1986 ranger 2 wheel drive, and 100,000 miles on it. I am assuming the white smoke will be a head gasket but do you know how to make it idle right and run better?
Actually, it might be a cracked head. The 2.8/2.9's were notorious for doing this. Thats probably where the white smoke is coming from. The black smoke is from it running too rich, somehow getting too much gas, that would also explain the rough idle.
my truck is a 2.0 4 banger, i put a distributor cap and rotor on today and she idles a better but i still have backfiring. now i have another problem that has been a problem for a while that im trying to fix. the valve cover is leaking oil around it, i loosened up the six bolts around it and it still wont come off, is there any bolts that i am missing or what? also i have oil like a carbon looking exaust coming out of my talk pipe and no white smoke??? does motor make scence to anyone at all??? i think what i am goin to try next it to rebuild the carb, its only 13 bucks, probably should be done anyway
