Engine smokes white/blue start up and idle
Engines smokes white startup and after idle
I'm new here so first I would like to say thanks for this site, lots of helpful information.
Here is my question, I have a early 1999 7.3l with 167,000 miles. When I first start it up there is a light haze of white/blue smoke coming out the tail pipe, when I take off it leaves a cloud of smoke for .5 mile then clears up. When I get ti town idleing around I notice a puff of smoke when I take off fron stop light.
The temps are in 70 at night so its not cold.
Truck is all stock, no mods that I know of.
I had it hooked up to AE scanner, all the glow plugs checked good, injector buzz good, throw p0472. ( I have a hole in the pipe, have to replace it)
Also threw P0272, P0275, & P0284. Not sure what this means.
Any help?

P0272 Cylinder 4 Contribution/Balance Fault
P0274 Injector Circuit High - Cylinder 5
P0284 Cylinder 8 Contribution/Balance Fault
Have you done a quick check for blowby? Does the exhaust smell like raw fuel and burn your eyes? The balance faults for 3 and 8 can occasionally be due to CPS, but usually not #4. There are multiple things that can cause an imbalance in the combustion event to trigger a change in rotational velocity during the tests.
Since you are getting a #5 high it could be contributing to an imbalance of the entire rotational issue. Have you ohmed out wiring for the injectors?

I had the same issue - my truck's glow plug relay was going out. If you leave it plugged in does it still start up rough like that? I know when my relay was going out it did that often or if I was trying to turn it over and there was too much fuel in there when it started - which is very possibly related to bad o-rings on the injectors.
