That is dried coolant. Psdwanabe is probably right. You are boiling over. I have the Predator at the 65HP setting and drove out to Calif. across the desert at 75-80 and never had boil over. Get a new cap or make sure the cap is on correctly.
Let me know if you figure out an easy way to clean that crap up.
Yeah, I know it's dried coolant, and I guess it's obvious that it's coming out of the cap...just wondered if many of you are experiencing the same thing.
My truck is BONE STOCK as well, although I use it to tow quite frequently, and am not too easy on it either!
I took Castral cleaner and a toothbrush...wiped it off with a towel, not so bad, but still NASTY.
I think the trucks are coming from the factory over-filled with coolant. My was and I had to drain some out. Your coolant should not be above the cold line when the engine is cold.
a couple of issues with the coolant...
the overflow bottle is too small,
there is too much coolant when you work it hard,
and there is a batch of bad caps...
they should hold 15 lbs. and mine only held 5 lbs pressure...
ssls6 is right on. Mine did it when I drove it hme the first night. Sucked out 1-1/2 qts with a baster. After the lower rad hose was replaced the teck did the same thing. Now I have a half gallon of "new" coolant.
Turkey baster..........I thought those things were always for automotive fluids, why I had no idea it was for food.............hum...can you imagine how many of us have gotten in a bit of trouble for that one.
jdadamsjr - thanks...that's a tactic I use on the racer boards when I want everyone to read about my issues, if I had just put "overflow tank leakage", half the board would've thought, "oh no, not this one again" - and ignored it.
Good tactic eh?
I thought of the possibility of overfill and a loose cap, but I don't recall it being loose the 1st time I noticed the stuff. If the truck was boiling over, it would be a bigger mess than that and the temp. gauge would probably register an overtemp...wouldn't it??
I went back to the dealership about a month or two after purchasing the truck and asked to meet the top diesel wrench just so we could have a B.S. session - I was AMAZED at how much time the guy spent with me...once he figured out I was mechanically inclined, we hit it off bigtime. He told me of all the troubles he was seeing and pointed to some of the items he was talking about (of course I had my hood open) - he noticed the leakage then and said he'd seen it before but isn't aware of any problems related to it. We spoke of the erratic idle, occasional loss of power and the weird downshifting in tow mode - he was the one who suggested I turn it in for the latest flash someday.
I did...last week.
I will inquire into getting a new cap, and keep my eye on it...previously I really didn't care, as it is just an overflow tank - but I'm on my FOURTH oil change now (20K miles) and decided it bothers me now.
As for a turkey baster, you betcha...have TWO of 'em available for "improper usage" in my shop...first thought of as I pressure bleed my braking systems before a race, this leaves the reservoir a bit too full and when the fluid gets hot, it leaks all over the place - YEK!!
SO, once I'm done bleeding the system out of all four corners, I take a couple shots with the turkey baster and get the reservoir at it's "FULL" mark...my girlyfriend has her "fancy" Pampered Chef baster that I won't dare lay a hand on!!
Thanks for the advice, support and shoulder to lean on guys!
