1970-72 had the same basic grille, only different INSERTS. Just unscrew the plastic insert and install the others. The 1970 had a fine egg crate design, the '71 had 9 blocks and the '72 had 4 blocks(if I recall correctly-pretty close though).
Just tried to put my 72' grille insert into my 70' grille and it would not fit. About 3/4 of an inch short on the bottom tabs, could possibly be done with some creative bending. Just go easy!
Some of the attachment points for the different grill shells are different. Some have 4 points (2 top 2 bottom) and some have 6 points ( 2 top 2 bottom 2 side)
I needed to change out the grille on my 70 f250. Unknowingly I bought a 72 grille which looked the same but when I went to install my 70 inserts they wouldn't attach. I ended up with the 72 inserts. If I'm not mistaken the 71-72 inserts slant backwards from the top down.
Finally found one on the internet Junk yard search. Claims the grille shell and inserts are in good condition. Cost $225.00. Pretty costly. I'm presently detailing it for a paint job. I should be able to shoot it in 2 weeks. Then put back all the bumpers, door handles, ect: Going back original wimbelton white. Thanks all. Jim TN
