First step is to make sure you have the proper amount of antifreeze in the radiator. If you are low on coolant you will get the same symptoms. If your radiator is topped off just spend the five to ten bucks and buy a new sending unit. Very cheap insurance and a snap to replace. The sending unit is located just behind the distributor on the air intake. Hope this helps.
for more peace of mind...buy a mechanical temp. gauge...I don't know for sure, but I think the temp gauge sender is just like the oil pressure sending unit, a dummy gauge.
I just put new Mechanical water temp and oil prssure gauges on my 88. The install was fairly simple and the gauges seem to be accurate. Just a temp gauge should only take about an hour. The hardest for me was drilling the Firewall, I drilled a 1 inch hole to the left of the Main Wiring Harness.\
Ford Temp and Oil Pressure Gauges are terrible replacing with Mechanical is much more accurate.
it ended up being the thermostat, and firestone tire tells me i need a new radiator........hmmm, it does leak and should have the hoses replaced, but a new radiator?!
I have a friend thatowns a Radiator Shop, he says they have a problem leaking at the seams on the sides of the radiator. I would replace before it becomes an issue. The hoses first then replace the radiator as soon as you get time.
\ Back to the gauges my 88 has had many gauge problems from the time I got i. Keep an eye on it, I had the top radiator hose bust and the temp gauge never went past normal, but when running the AC it ran to the high side of normal and my oil pressue gauge changed from day to day.
