Yes you have to pull the headlight **** to the "ON" position, reach your arm up under the dash and there is a button that you have to push down on top of the headlight switch, at the same time pull the **** and shaft out as one piece. If you push easy on the shaft and **** back in you can turn off the headlights and still have the shaft come out without jhaving to repeat above step, if not disconnect the battery cable.
Ranger429, that's the procedure for 78 and back. In 79 ford used a different style, like what was on the 80's trucks. You pull to on postion, but then the **** has a retaining clip built into the switch. Rotate the switch until you see the square indention and use a small flat tip screwdriver to press clip outward and off stem.
HUH??? that is news to me!! My '79 is the same as a '78 and earlier and also as '80 and up! What you are refering to is how to get the **** off of the shaft. What my answer to his question was is how to get the shaft and the **** free from the headlight switch. Almost all headlight switches including GM and Chrysler use the same technique with the push button on the switch to free the shaft.
Well, my 79 has the new style. The shaft itself is not removable on my truck. Only the ****. Now, somebody at some point may have changed it, but thats my setup. My 78 does have the button and the **** is "cast" or part of the shaft, can't be removed. Not trying to step on toes, just describing mine. But then again, alot of parts can change in 25 years of servicing.
I don't know when that style switch came into to service, but I know my fathers 81 had that type switch, the 87-92 and 92-96 also had that style shaft. Just my 2 cents worth.
Thanks all, appreciate it much, once I found that button it came right out. I cleaned that switch up, but the instrument lights are still very dim, not able to dim and brighten them, just off or on dim. Any ideas? I am thinking it might need a new switch. I would not really bother ecept its hard to see the gauges, especillaly if there are street lights and its not completely pitch dark out.
Thanks again guys, I suspect I will be asking lots of questions from you.
Rick
thanks again everyone, really appreciate it. Is it worth it to try and fix the switch, or should I suck it up and buy a new one? I will pull out the green tints, but I am always adjusting the lighting on all my cars, must be neurotic or something. I like them bright sometimes and lower others, and the way it is righ tnow, its dom or off.
