Updated instrument voltage regulator

Below is a website to an updated version of an instrument voltage regulator that appears to be a little more reliable than the old IVR's. I have not tried it myself, but it does look interesting. Does anybody know if this would or would not work? http://www.164club.org/spanreg.html

I wonder if anyone has done any testing as to the current draw of the guage circuits? Those regulators are usually rated for a 1.5 amp load WITH a heat sink. Of course if the amp draw was less, you would not need a heatsink. Otherwise, it should work good I would think.

On the 78 f-150, the fuse for the instrument panel is rated at three amps. Would a 3 amp circuit require a heat sink?

Instead of a 7810 fixed voltage linear regulator, a better part would be a LM338, which is adjustable, and has a much higher current rating, 5 AMPS.

The unit in the article is rated for 1.5 amps max. And the only way you can attain that rating without burning it up is with it mounted to a decent size piece of aluminum. I haven't looked at all the specs, but I am guessing you could run at least 1/2 amp without a heatsink.

3 amps is too much for that regulator unit in the article. But just because the factory puts a 3 amp fuse in the circuit, doesn't mean it draws 3 amps. The current draw of the circuit needs to be measured with a digital voltmeter set up for current measurement. And I am thinking your worst current draw to the guages on the older trucks will be with a full tank of gas, a warm engine, and a high oil pressure reading.
