AOD swap

Hi guys, i'm new to the site here. i have a 77 Bronco that I've had since 1984. right now it has 55K original miles on it. 302, 3spd, dual tanks, power steering and brakes.i have had several broncos from all the body styles but this one is my baby. i am thinking about doing some mods on it and could use some guidance. i have an 89 mustang GT engine and an AOD/transfer case out of an 86 bronco. (bothe are fresh) i dont have a problem geting the EFI up and running but my question is with the use of the AOD/Tcase from the 86. is it useable in the early bronco or shoud i use one of the conversion adapters that allow me to use the AOD with the original 77 T-case. thanks all.

It sounds like you have a nice Bronco and a pretty good project ahead of you.
The swap to EFI is a little time consuming, but definetely worth it.

As far as the AOD swap, this is what I would do. I would purchase the AOD to Bronco Dana 20 adaptor. I have heard (but never been able to confirm) that the later model 208's and Borg Warner transfer cases are too wide to fit between the frame rails. I've seen a few 205's in them though and I can't imagine that they are much larger. The Dana 20 is stronger due to cast iron construction and gear driven rather than chain.

Since you would need to disassemble the transmission to change the output shaft, having it gone through would make good sense. Especially if you don't know the history of it. It's no fun to get done with a project only to find out that the transmission slips or doesn't shift at all.

Another thing to consider is gearing and tire size. In some cases with taller tires and higher gearing, the engine doesn't have enough power to pull OD at lower highway speeds.

thanks Jason. thats a good point about width. i never thought of that. also about the gear drive over the chain. besides my 77's T-case only has 55K miles on it and i know the history well. the trans i have is out of an 86 bronco i used to drive daily and the trans has only about 1K miles on it since it was completly rebuilt. its actually still a good running truck but the body is completly rusted beyond repair. its a great truck that served me well but its time to let go and part her out.

i will most likley run 33 inch tires so im hoping stock gear ratio wont be to big an issue. any idea what the stock ratio was? i think i had the front cover off some years ago and found them to be 4.10"s or somthing like that. i remember when i used to drive it it had to struggle at 65.

i am looking forward to the EFI swap. i put a late model TPI set up in a 71 camaro i have and after that conversion i swore of carbs forever. modern tech rules. thanks again. i am enjoying the info on this board and hope to add to it.

by the way can you post pics on these replys?

Your 208 is definitely too wide for an early bronco frame. And I think the AOD will require driveshaft length changes-probably worth the effort though
