I'm curious...around here I see absolutely no broncos with standard trannies, and even looking on ebay you can only find a few that do. Was this an unpopular option or something or is there a different reason why almost every big bronco has a slushbox?
78514ford, do you still have the granny 4 speed? Mine is 4-speed OD and I've been looking for a granny 4 for a small block for a while now. If you still have it and it has the small block bolt pattern I would be interested.
I still have the transmission and would like to talk to you but I have not been a user long enough to e-mail you so if you would send me your e-mail address we could discuss it further,Thanks 78514Ford.
my bronco was an 89 302 w/ the m50d tranny from the factory. this wasnt the greatest manuel to have, so i swapped to a 460 w/ a zf behind it. i love being in control of the gears and i dont truck anything but a c6 or c4's and only them when they are built. OD trannys just dont make me happy. but if you look enough, you can find a good number of bronco's w/ the 4 and 5 speeds. but not too much after 91 or 92
My 88 came with a standard 5 speed manual tranny. This is the main reason I bought it. Driving would be way too boring if there is no need to shift. I like to be the one to decide what gear I need and when.
I think most folks prefer the automatic transmission. The wife would like to drive the Bronc, however she does not want to deal with the manual tranny.
I have the 4 spd with OD on my 88 5.0. The truck is a little sluggish if I'm shifting to save gas but if I wind the gears out it's not so bad for a 2 and a half ton truck. Still, my 86 automatic was much nicer to drive with my morning coffee!
I had the 4 spd OD behind a 302 in my 83, was pretty nice to drive. I'm debating about whether to try to swap a ZF or NP435 into my 94 when the E4OD dies, but it may be more trouble than it's worth.
You guys who like slushboxes can keep them. I'll take a clutch peddle anyday.
I had to look for a while before I found a bronco with a manual tranny. I ended up having to go two states over to find one. I don't think ford ever sold the 5.8L/manual/bronco combo. I know I have only ever seen them with 4.9L or 5.0L's. I have the M5OD and I think it works fine. If you find one with the ZF for a fare price buy it. Just keep looking adventually you will find one.
