i have a 1979 ford f-150 4x4, w/ a 400. all i did was change engines, and now my powersteering does not work. it worked great before having the engine out for about 1 day. i have tried 2 used pumps, and am now on the 2nd brand new p.s. pump. i replaced the return line and the pressure line, and also put a new coupler (the flexible pad). today i put in a new/rebuilt gear box. still nothing. i have tried bleeding it several times, and have flushed the entire p.s. system. i have read about some kind of power bleeding, has anyone ever heard of that? all i get is some assistance turning to the right. any help would be greatly appreciated.
i thought of that also. but the lines are different size at each end, so they can only go in one place. i know the belt is turning the pump, but i guess i will try and find a pressure gauge and that would help me see if the pump is working right.
it has a new belt, and is in the same exact location. the engines are both 400's. i wondered that, but with a v belt didn't think it was possible. any help would be great.
what is the BEST way to bleed the system? i have turned the wheels lock to lock several times. i have done this w/ the engine running, and shutoff. i have also had both tires off the ground to bleed it.
ok, check this out. i put an older pump on, the all metal type and it works great. i must of got 2 bad pumps from checker's. just my luck. this is all after 2 new pumps, gear box. new pressure and return lines, coupler, 5-6 qts of fluid(from bleeding) and hours of time and frustration. what do you think i should tell checker's in the morning? or can you think of any other reason 2 pumps would not work at all.
What I did was pull the return hose off the pump, fill the pump up, put a right angle drill on the pulley, I do believe there is allen bolt on the pulley, made sure the pulley was turning the right direction . I turned the pump and added fluided till solid fluid came out the hose and stuck the hose back on.
I tried pulling the coil wire off and using the engine to turn the pump, cranking on and off filled the muffler with fumes, and I didn't know it. Got everything good to go, put the coil wire back on, turned the key and a BIG BANG fill the air no more muffler, if you can use a drill, just my 2 cents
I had the same problem when I rebuilt the engine in my 79 4x4. Worked fine before and then it didnt. I changed the pump and put a new box on it. it works now but it keeps pissing the fluid out the cap. I thought the cap had a hole in it so I gaot another one and it has a hole also. must be a pressure relife or something. I thought I might have overservice it because it only does it when i shut it off. but after a few times the powersteering quites working because its to low on fluid.
