Steering wheel alignment + more stoopid questions.
Hope you guys aren't sick of me asking questions yet.
I replaced my steering box yesterday, and the steering wheel is about 45 degrees off center with the wheels straight.
I know that there is an easy way to adjust that, as I have had it done many times in the past with front end alignments. Problem is, short of pulling off the steering wheel, I don't have a clue on how this is done.
Thanks for all of your help....
Glenn.
P.S. Another stupid question.. -- Fuel pump whine.. After the truck has been running for a while, the fuel pump starts to make this whinning noise. I know it is the pump, because it is the same noise that is made when you turn the key to on, and the system charges... Is this a sign of the pump failing, or is it just a noisy little critter???
I am guessing that this has something to do with the truck being difficult to start once it is warm. I actually have to step on the gas slightly to get the engine to catch (5.8 fi)
What I am concerned about is that the wheel is far enough off that I cannot hit my directionals and have them stay.
Seems to me that if I pull the wheel and replace it that I am going to wind up with the same problem, all I will be changing is the position of the steering wheel, not the directional finder, etc...
I figured the whine was somewhat normal, it just seemed a bit loud.. Since a new pump is over 300 bucks, I think I will learn to love the noise.. <GRIN>
Seems like you didn't get the pitman arm back in the correct position. You have two choices, pull the pitman arm or pull the steering wheel and line it up. Once you have the wheel in the correct position your directionals will work as they should.
both the wheel and the pitman arm are keyed to go on one way on my truck, an alignment shop can straighten the wheel by turning your adjustment sleeves you could do it yourself but your alignment will be off
I have not fixed it yet, but I think I know what happened. Since the pitman is keyed, I know it is on the right direction, otherwise it would be impossible to connect it all. I do think though that I got the pitman on the drag link a little off..
Think I will try loosening the pitman / drag link connection, straighning out the wheel and trying it again..
