How does a time share work?
My mom just came back from a Caribbean cruise, and she was telling me she bought a time share that is good world wide. Europe, Asia, you name it. She says it needs to be booked a year in advance. She also says it's a life-long thing, and me, my wife, and brother and sister can benefit from her membership. But for $12 000, I almost spilled my pop on myself.
I'd probably take advantage of it, since she's forking out the money that could probably be put to better use. I just have to start "planning" our "vacations."
Do they really stick you in a seminar when you get there? Or now that they have her money, do they leave you alone?
Any input?

It depends there are all kinds with different rules. I have one where I get so many points a year. Then I just call in to make a reservation at the time share to use them. Just need to call at least 24 hours in advance and members have priority for reservations. I can also bank my points up to three years worth. The points can also be used for other time shares through Interval International. Also it can be used by family members and passes to them upon death (as well as the maintenance fees 
).
We got it because my wife was invited to a seminar where they gave a speil about it. Then you got to stay there for 1 weekend free after listening to the 30 min presentation.
Time shares are only worth it if you vacation alot. Being military when we go on vacation it is usually to go home to visit relatives so we rarely use it. We are trying to sell ours.

It wasn't just my mom, but my aunt as well. I wouldn't buy one for myself, but hey, if I can take full advantage of it, you can bet I will.
I just want to know more about it.
Also, one of my cousins have a time share in Vegas. They go there several times a year.

There are alot of different types of time share programs,there are also alot of bad ones,your local travel agency can usually tell you who the good ones are.My mom and dad have a time share on a condo in florida that they have had for years and they are very happy with it,well almost,back when the hurricane went through their condo ended up in the Gulf of Mexico.My Dad still jokes about having beer in the fridge that is somewhere out there.But they made out ok,their belongings were replaced and now they have a real nice condo.

Time shares are not an investment vehicle. They are for use. If you use it it may be worth it. If you rarely go on vacation it is a waste.

I bought a "Time Share Condo" at Whistler way back in the 80's and could use it "free 8 weeks a year" but I couldn't use it during the Christmas/New Years Holidays or the Easter Week/Spring Break and all the other hand picked holiday weeks or weekends that are reserved for "The Beautiful People" exclusivley.
On the bright side, I was able to trade those weeks for wonderful holidays all over the world. Plus all of those "Beautiful People" were paying peak premium rates for Whistler Town Square from a balcony view. This helped to pay the mortgage off in 10 years, now I had no charges monthly other than maintenance and can stay in any "Time Share" in the portfolio free.
So as you see not all "Time Shares" are created equal, one of the tricks is to buy into the most popular area that you can; even if you don't like it. You can always barter for a Carribean getaway with a layover in Margarittaville.
I think we all need to look at these opportunities and take advantage.

I've gone to a few of the timeshare hardsells, and IMHO anything where they force you to make a quick decision with no option to think over it for a few days isn't worth it. Also, it seems the main purpose is for you to just stay at their resorts, not do any sightseeing.
Some people must like them though, they're staying in business. Just not my idea of a vacation.

We have a couple of points based time shares. Both are now worth more than we paid for them, but that is VERY rare. Disney Vacation Club and Marriott Vacation Club are nice, but the others ..............
