I've had a bit of a year, dealing with this horrific disease. My brother-in-law lost his father to it, a friend at work was laid to rest because of it, and now my eldest sis, who's been fighting it for 6 months since diagnosis, has been told hers is terminal.
I belong to various forums, and have set up a folding@home team on a pc help forum. If anyone is interested in joining, and putting the idle time your pc spends to work on researching this, and various other, as yet, incurable diseases, feel free.
My intent is not to take away from any forum, or make anyone feel insulted by this. I'd be honored to hear that this forum also set up a team if they so desire as well. I can only set up one, and fold for one, thus I post this from time to time in more mature forum settings.
For those who've been touched by this, please join. It could be your own life, or the life of a loved one you save by donating some of your pc's idle cpu time to such a worthy cause.
All I can say is I really feel bad for you , and all that you and those around you have been going through. Most importantly is to never give up period !!! My friends step daughter was diagnoised with the rarest cancer located in the stomach/ intestines over five years ago. AT that time only 5 people on the whole EARTH had it, and no one ever survived it or even lived probably more than a couple months. ALthough it has been a living nightmare , she is alive and looks like a normal 8th grader today. I seen her last weekend and there is no traces of Cancer. She was given odds that were "UNBEATABLE". She is a great example of mind and hope . Never give up your faith , as your mind is your greatest asset. I wish all of you the very best.
Thankyou Ghost. Very true, that faith can attain more than anything else, and glad to hear your friend's daughter is doing so well. She is a miracle indeed, and proof of the power of faith. My sis requires an experimental stem cell transplant, that is yet not approved, and the hospital where she is is in limited supply of beds for such treatments...thus she either waits, or just lives with what time she has left, depending on which comes first. Currently sending e-mails and letters to the Canadian Cancer Society, as well as letters to the local MLA's in regards to this in hopes of pushing this sort of thing through. She's barely into her 40's, and is way to young to pass on, IMO, but she has left a very positive mark on this world, and if she were to pass now, she'd be remembered as a very good person. She's always been willing to help, stand up and be counted, and was always there for her friends and family. I come from a religious background, and although we're not supposed to talk about religion in here, this is one time I hope an exception is made. I pray for her daily, as well as my family members. She's touched us all, and will in many, many respects, be a hero amongst few in my life. If even half the people I know today were as pure at heart, and as steadfast as she is, this world would be a better place.
I do hope some take time to read the initial post, and join in with what folding has to offer towards cancer research.
I'm pretty sure all of us have been touched by it at one point or another....folding uses your pc's idle time to help cancer research, and it's a relatively cheap way of contributing to finding a cure. Leaving your pc running 24/7 with the folding program running might add an extra 5-7 bucks a month to your power bill. That's a cost I can live with. I also donate to several cancer fund raisers every year, as well as participate/raise money for a couple myself. It's taken on a whole new meaning in the last year though, and now I'll do everything I can to support it.
My family has been touched by that disease several times. My son's computer time is donated often. They seem to like his machine because it is about as fast as you can get. My wife is a volunteer that does house visits and she donates her days off during the week. We attend and help organize fundraisers.
I lost my wife to cancer over 3 years ago. It's a horrible disease and I pray that a cure is found someday. She had a masectomy and the disease came back in her right lung and spread from there. Her faith in God helped her but she came to realize that God needed her more than we did.....we meaning my son who is 6 now and his to half-sisters.
My prayers are with you......
One of our firefighters died several years back of lung cancer at 36 years of age - never smoked a day of his life. One of my coworkers died a few months back of a cancerous brain tumor. He wasn't that old, early 50's maybe. I can't think of anyone I know who hasn't been "touched" by this horrific disease in one way or another. I'll certainly check out folding. I wish you and your family the very best.
My grandfather was a heavy smoker and was diagnosed with lung cancer. This was about 3-4 years ago. He beat it, the odds were against him, especially since he was having heart problems along with it, 3 open heart surgeries can't be good. But he beat it, and is still alive today, and thank god he has quit smoking. But that man is about 75 yrs old, had lung cancer, and 3 openheart surgeries and is still fighting. Sometimes he is a vegetable, others it's like, wow, this old man can do that after all he's been through? He is a true inspiration to me, and he shows that with faith and determination, you can beat it
Last Year 2 of my girlfriends died of breast cancer, one was 34 the other was 44..
Every family member on my fathers side has died of colon cancer.
Myself have had skin cancer / Basal Cell Carcinoma.. I can relate and will check out your sites
I don't understand this "folding" process. Could you explain how it works a little more?
It's a program that you download, allow your internet connection to run, and it "folds"protiens, and deciphers information in regards to diseases such as cancer, aids, and many other, thus far, incureable diseases. Up to anyone if they want to run it. Mine runs 24/7, save for times I need to shut it down for a reboot, or am gaming, which is little these days, I feel the folding is more important to me.
An update on my sis....by some miracle, she's going to be getting her second(experimental) stem cell transplant this January...just got off the phone with her....I'm ecstatic about this...tears of joy, relief, excitement....and not sure how to put that to words really....
All I know is she gets another shot at living...and that's all I can think about!
My grandmother died Thanksgiving morning from breast cancer that had spread to her kidneys. She was given a 3 to 4 month prognosis and passed less than a week later. I don't think that she could bear to die a drawn out death and just let herself go. I'll see about downloading the program after I put my son to bed tonight. Tell your sister to hang in there and NEVER give up.
RR4E, my heart goes out to you and your family. I will add all of you to my FTE prayer list. I do believe that cancer has hit all families at one time or another. I have lost both an uncle and a aunt with in weeks of each other. I knew my aunt but not my uncle. They were both on my moms side and lived in Ohio. Then mom lost her friend that lived across the street when she went back to Ohio. She also died of cancer. I pray that some how a cure will be found. Please tell your sister that she has prayers coming form Montana for her.
I had a friend that got cancer, and he went quick. My wifes family has had a few already, and her Grandfather has days to live as we speak. Its a horrable way to go, but never give up.
