Well, starting to order parts for my 390 to 410 project. Looking for advise on parts list, looking to make around 400 hp and a boat load of torque (thats why I'm going 410 to start with). I am gathering the straight forwards now, 428 crank, 428 flexplate, 390 rods but not sure about pistons yet(forged/cast/brand). I know I am going to run edel heads, RPM manifold, 750 cfm carb., roller rocker set-up(not sure which one), still tring to figure out what cam. I'm thinking between 9-9.5 to compression. Probably an MSD ignition set-up. Any help in filling in the gaps would be greatly appreciated, I have never talked to anyone who has done one of these but I know there is someone out there that has. Thanks in advance!
looks like you have most of it figured out. You just need to match the cam to your hardware, your vehicle and what kind of driving you want to do.
check out cranecams.com
look at the specs and the description of the cam. It will tell you what comp ratio is good, what rpm range is good, what cruise rpm, if it requires a higher stall TC for an auto ..etc.
comp cams has a similar site, as well as other Cam makers. with your longer stroke and extra cubes, you can probably go with a bit more cam than the manufacturers sites reccomend.
As for roller rockers. I run the Ersons. They are about $650, but that includes stands, shafts and rockers. They have some pre-rigged for teh Edel heads now.
MSD igintion is good, that's what I'm running. But I would consider the DUI setup, knowing what I know now.
It's going in a '67 mustang fastback that will do mostly the car show weekend criuse thing but will see a run down the strip now and again or a little stop light to stop light (op, did I say that out loud). Now I know this is a truck site but this the best FE forum out there.
It looks to me like your compression ratio is going to be high with that combination. Like at least 11:1. I'd look into the Edelbrock 60079 heads, meant for the 427, they have the 2.09" intake and 1.66" exhaust valves. They also have a 76cc combustion chamber which will lower your compression down to around 10.5:1. Still, I'd look at dished pistons.
I also figured these up with .040" thick head gaskets, with .020" gaskets it'd be higher yet.
Just trying to give you a heads up on the compression, since you said you were shooting for 9-9.5:1.
Why would the CR be so high with my set up? I was under the impression that with the edel heads and stock 410 pistons height I would have a problem making 9-9.5 to 1, I though the 410 was failry low compression, I may be wrong. As far as tranny, I use a C-6 with shift kit and gearing I was thinking 3.55's with a traction lock, better street manners than a detroit locker.
I think the stock 410 was 10.5:1. The edel heads should put you at about 10:1 with nothing fancy done to the engine. You should be fine. That is with the 72cc chambers also. Use a felpro standard head gasket. This is assuming you are using 1976 390 pistons. They have a little dish to them.
Ratsmoker, are the '76 390 pistons the ones that have 410 stamped on them, the ones that were used to drop CR in the early '70's on the 390? Also, I am still scouting for a good machine shop here in southern Virginia, if RapidRus is out there I think he is from Va., I grew up in Oregon were there was a couple back in the day that knew the FE, any input here would greatly appreciated.
If this is a duplicate sorry, Ratsmoker, are the '76 390 pistons the ones that have 410 stamped on them that were used to lower CR in the early '70's on 390's?
