'96 full sized Broncho with 5.4L. Not sure which auto tranny is in it.
Took it to Jiffy Lube yesterday for their $90.00 tranny flush service. I just noticed that Mercon is recomended (on the dip stick and in my Haynes manual). The invoice says they put Dextron III in it. Will this be, or is this a problem?
Go back and ask. They probably put a dual rated fluid in it, which should be fine. They probably do a majority GM work, and therefore have it listed as Dexron in their computer. It'd be kind of hard for 'em to ring it up differently. But yeah, go back and ask.
If so, then you have to think that they put in Pennzoil's Dexron III ATF, and that wouldn't be a problem, because it meets and exceeds Ford's Mercon specs.
When in doubt, get all the facts/details.
Either go to a dealer or write down your entire VIN and call a Ford dealer.
They'll tell you exactly which tranny you've got and which fluids are usable in it.
Dude if you have a 96 Bronco with a 5.4 you have a vehicle that has had a engine swap(99.9999999% sure this is not the case). Please don't take offense but you need to learn a little more about your truck to properly take of it.
The modular engines were NEVER installed in the Bronco. Either a 5.0 or a 5.8 and possibly the inline 6 but not a 5.4.
5.8L I'll never get used to metric engine sizes!!! IT'S A 351 DAMN IT! Sorry . . . I had a writ of fage.
Good advice all . . . Thank God for FTE, He must be a Ford man.
Boy my earlier post sounded snotty as he11. Didn't mean it that way. The Mercon/dextronIII will be just fine. Watch out for the jiffylube idiots. Double check everything when they are done.
