It could be a lot of different things, timing, sticky valve, vac advance in dist, how did your old plugs look, any of them oily or covered with carbon?

Check for exhaust back pressure. Your cat maybe partially clogged.

try taking the belt off of the smog pump.. Sometimes one of those valves fail and cause back firing..

Thanks for the help. pulled the belt off worked great. now what did the screw on the carb do that my friend turned trying to make it stop? It must be cold idle or something.

It more than likely adjusted the idle mixture.... the easiest way to re adjust it is to turn it in all the way and back it out until you reach the lowest idle speed...

Is it a Holley carb? Power Valve failure will make it backfire through the carb.

It is through the carb, right?
