i just bought a car with a 351 and the engine is brand new. what is the best way to break it in? how often are oil changes needed, and what kind of oil is best (only because ive heard synthetic blends are bad for brand new engines). any information is appreciated
thanks
I have used the 100 mile approach. After the first 100 miles i change the oil after an overhaul, glitter in the oil is normal but flakes are bad news. I would probably use 10W-30 for the first one or two oil changes. Then after that you can use your synthetic blend. Break it in like your going to drive it.
I have always changed the initial oil right after starting the moter for the first time, letting it warm up, setting the timing, adjusting the carb etc. then after 100mi and then every 1000 for ever.
I do it this way because of the assembly lube and all of the "glitter" 1979ford mentioned, the glitter is normal, but its abrasive.
Oil is cheap, a new motor aint. There is no such thing as changing it too often.
If you drive like me (maniac), give it a couple hundred before beating it to death, after a rebuild all them parts have got to get to know each other again before they are comfortable going to red line.
