We had a discussions the other day in one of my classes about littering. I was surprised how many people said they do litter or thought it wasn't that important. What do you all think about it? Have any of you ever thrown anything out the window before?
I NEVER throw anything out a car/truck window or on the ground at any time. When I see someone who does I am tempted to stop and pick it up and take it to them and say, "I think you dropped this!"
I know some things are biodegradable but my feeling is the less we dispose of that way the cleaner we can keep out planet. It is the least we can do!
To be perfectly honest, I did ONE TIME drop a small wrapper on the ground, but that is really the only time I can remember. I usually try to pick up large pieces as I'm walking across school grounds (filthy, especially after lunch) but sometimes I'm too self-conscious to do it... And I constantly see kids just drop their trash, be it bags from McDonalds or whole wrappers and cans. It's sad really that they have no regard or pride in their school. Plus the seagulls have feeding frenzies every day after lunch.
I'm a Eagle Scout.... litter isn't exactly on my 'A' list. johare said it, the more you do now, the more clean earth there is for later. We only have one planet earth.
When I go hunting, fishing and camping there is hardly a mile on a trail or road you don't see litter on. Some of these areas I go to are 20 miles away from any paved roads. I just can't see the rational of someone who has taken that much trouble to enjoy the outdoors only to leave garbage behind? What's even worse is our landfill tipping fees have given some slobs the excuse to illegally dump in the bush as well. Access and logging roads are littered with old fridges propane tanks, shingles, tires etc. I also worked as park ranger in northern Ontario. The only access allowed in the park was by foot or by canoe. On a 10 day patrol we would routinely collect a green garbage bag or more in litter. So it doesn't matter where you go, rareley can you escape it. It's a sad statement of our culture in north america.
I was camping/deer hunting last season on my brothers land and someone during the night blocked our exit with a truck load of crap......Sorry SOB'(s) I just don't know what ta think about some people. These low lifes must think it's someone else responsibility to clean up after them.
I have come out of the woods many times while deer hunting or scouting deer trails, with my pockets stuffed with trash that some slob threw down.My rule is,If you are not going to take your trash out when you leave, then dont bring it in the first place!
The thing that I notice the most that ticked me off the most is when people diliberatly dump. Im talkin tires, regrigerators, TVs, ovens and kinds of other stuff. I can't tell you how many times I've seen old cars in the snake river while duck hunting.
I only litter when im in NYC i figure after living there for over 37 years that the entire place is a dump anyway, so technically it aint littering its just misfiling the garbage
I bought my 1 acre of land over 3 years ago. It was 80% woods. I've been cleaning it for over 2 years now. I can't even tell you how much garbage I've hauled out of here. Friges, stoves, hot water tanks, bed springs, etc, etc. Many a truck load. Just talked to a guy who is gonna come over with his tracter in a week or so and level the 20 year old dump out so I can finish cleaning up all these people's trash over who knows how many years off of my property. What amazes me is how these people just took all thier trash and dumped it out in the woods on thier own property instead of taking it to the dump. It has taken several yaers but I'm finally gonna get this mess cleaned up.
The Army and Boy Scouts drilled no littering into me. The only thing I throw out is if I tracked it in (ie. rocks, dirt, leaves). I have spent many a hour volunteering walking along the highway or street picking up garbage (adopt a street programs).
Id Diesel, I have seen more than 50 cars in the Snake. One marks the spot of the best sturgeon fishing hole. My big itch is when people throw their cigarette butts all over the place. In Idaho it's illegal to throw trash, paper or burning material out of a car, but the police don't do anything even when someone throws a lit butt out right in front of them.
I live out in a rural area, and I see a lot of littering and dumping along the gravel roads. One time, I was on my way home and found a truck with a topper shell parked alongside the road in front of my place. Thinking it might have been broke down (it was a Chevy, come to think of it), I stopped to offer some help. The driver was a guy in his late 40's/early 50's, and he had at least 10 old tires in the back end. He told me that he was going to toss them into the ditch in front of my house, because "most farmers have a brush pile, and they can put the tires on it and burn them." Well, needless to say, he did'nt end up throwing them out, at least not at my house. Things like that really send me over the edge. I don't toss my garbage out in town on other peoples property, so I don't see where they figure they have the right to toss theirs out on mine. I've picked up literally truckloads of trash, not just litter, but old washing machines, water heaters, tires, car seats... you name it. Now, if I see somebody throwing stuff out in the country, I take their license plates down and call the law. Nothing gets done most of the time, but I at least feel like I'm doing something.
We have a small amount of trash on the sides of the roads, like bags and papers/wrappers but no cars or refridgerators in the woods. In maine we see old cars/trucks in the woods or off to the sides of people's property all the time when snowmobiling. I don't mind it at all, I like looking at the old beaters and laughing.
