My new lariat with 1000 miles has only been getting 12.3 mpg on it. I put exhaust on and it increased to 12.9 ( this is highway use). Is this what the rest of you guys are getting or is something not right with this truck, it is getting way expensive!!!

That still seems kind of young to get a true test.
I'm over 500 miles and only halfway through my second tank (with the standard 27 gallons).
My first tank got 13 MPG, but that was assuming the dealer topped it off all the way, which I really doubt. We'll see over the next couple of tanks.
I just filled up for the first time, my first tank got me 291.2 miles/ 21.5 gallons for 13.54 mpg. I have heard that mpg can be affected by the gas in yyour region. My father swears that he gets 2mpg less on baltimore gas than he does when he is up here in rochester NY.
I'll be the first before someone else chimes in to tell you seach this forum for mpg.
But to answer your question, I averaged 13.5 combo driving on my first tank, now it's up to 14.5. I have the FX4 pkg (4wd) with the 3.73ls and 18" rims. Alot will depend on how you drive, conditions such as grade/wind speed/direction but I would say that is on the low side for all highway. What speed are you averaging? There was a post earlier in the forum where a guy calculated his avg mpg at various speeds and found 60-70 to be optimum.
Take care.

Reason: addl info
I was averaging 13.2, had the PCM reflashed and am now getting 14.5. I had noticed, prior to the flash, that when maintaing road speed of 35-45, that the tach would seem to move before the truck did, maybe some transmission slippage, but it has gone away since the flash. It's not a big improvement, but closer to the sticker. This is all around town driving. 54 with 3.55, no LS.
60 to 70 is not the best.
I have an 04 Lariat 4x4 3.73 gear.
I have tested at 55,60,70 and 85.
At 55 it gets 17.8.
At 70 it gets 13.0.
At 85 it gets 11.3.
All city driving is about 14mpg.
Anything over 55 mph is killing the millage
Mileage definitely will improve over time. Now that I have 15,000 miles I am averaging 16.2 mpg over the last 500 miles per the computer. (Screw, 4x4, 5.4, 3.73, 275 65 18s). This is mostly country road driving with some interstate mixed in with rolling hills. When I picked up the truck last September I was averaging in the 14s for the same type of driving.
My average MPG is about 12.1. It gets better when I go on longer road trips.
As for now, I drive 7.9 miles to work in stop and go traffic.
I own a 04 F-150 Lariat Super Crew with 5.4 motor and limited slip rear end.
Just to clarify. When I stated that I had read 60-70 was the best, I was referring to highway speeds. That's what BB65 was concerned with when he asked if 12.9 (mostly highway) was average. Of course the lower speeds, ie lower rpms will increase your mpg but so is doing 55 on a 70mph interstate.
5.4L with 3.73's
Over the last 735 mile I've averaged 12.4 MPG. I'll admit upfront that I have a heavy foot, but yeah it's expensive. My tank fill ups are around $40. I wonder if new software would help?
My truck is a "fully loaded" 2004 F-150 Lariat Supercrew 4 x 2.....with the 5.4 V8 and 3.55 LS axle.
On my most recent 100% interstate ONLY highway trip, with an average speed of 70 - 75 MPH, I got 21.1 MPG!!!! And NO, that 21.1 is NOT a typo!!
Around town (some city street driving, some highway driving, and some interstate driving), I am averaging betwen 17.0 - 18.2 MPG!!
My drving style is "spirited"; I don't "baby" my truck, nor do I "dog" it! I accelerate gently, and look WAY ahead of where I am driving to anticipate green lights getting ready to turn red, stop signs, drivers approaching from side streets, etc., etc.
And FYI.....for EVERY 5 MPH over 60 MPH that you drive, your gas mileage will decrease an average of 7!!
