Hey all, a notice from our fearless webmaster has got me thinking, when is the last time you checked your computer for viruses ? Apparently some evil miscreant haas created a self-replicating virus that copies your address book and sends the virus to everyone in your computer's memory. I had to shut my system down and load new antiviral software to get things to work properly again. Actually, my son did it for me, he said my computer set him the virus via E-mail. The were 9 other viruses that were on my machine as well, but Norton had stopped them. I now have a 'sweet' updated program from norton that checks every E-mail going out or coming in, and does a self diagnostic every day. I watched the new software stop the virus from coming back 11 times in one day. Are there other E-mail programs that are less vulnerable to attack than the microsoft 'outlook express' that I have now ? I have always used Norton anti Viral software, and Ken likes Eudora, what do the rest of you use ? Do you load it yourself or do you get some kid (like I had my son) do it for you ? DF
i have PC-chillin real time scan. each time a new update is availible i download it. i just paid 2 grand cnd for a 1.2 gHz, 60 gig hdd 256 megs ramm 19 inch monitor, dvd player 8x8x40 cr-burner/rewrite/read and windows xp! no way will i not use a anti-virus program!

You too?? I got hit as well, but I use Eudora as well,
Rockette used to use Outlook, But has to use the same
software as I do now, Outlook has been excised from the
system...
I was using MacAfee, but was a couple weeks past the
free update time period, so I went and bought Norton,
which I should have done in the first place...

I use Norton. It scan incoming and outgoing emails and does a system scan once a week plus downloads new updates when available. Knock on wood I haven't gotten hit yet.
Eudora is email software. Microsoft Outlook, put bluntly, sucks. Its very prone to virus infection. Eudora is not prone to viruses and its address book can't be touched by inbound email. You still need to have good anti-virus software because Eudora will detach the virus and put it in your download directly. Anti-virus software will delete the file.
I'm REALLY getting sick of the virus emails, nearly 250 per day now because my email address is probably in hundreds, if not thousands, of address books.
I'd like to have a little face to face time with a Virus creator, and then some time with the Limp Wristed Judge that just gave him a slap on the wrist.
I think I've had to Re-init my disk at least three timea, and had to go through my Temp and some other filse inumearble times because of these Freak's of the Pond scum genra!
So in other words if people on here have FTE in their address book ,FTE will get hit,as opposed to NOT having FTE in the address book,FTE won't get hit?
I download Virus update's every 4 days from Symantec.
I delete everything that comes along.
Is it still possible that FTE could get something (virus) from my Outlook express?
How about the time I got sent an e-mail (with a virus attached) that SAID it was from John Wilker.I knew it wasn't from him but,Is that what you are talking about Ken?
I use Nortons 2001 and Nortons Firewall and update it every fri. and knock on wood it has caught a couple viruses and it scans everything in and outbound from OLE. The Nortons Firewall I also Update everyfri they update together and the firewall is prob one of the best things i have ever got because i got a new 1.9 gig 528 meg ram 100 gig hd HP that i sure as heck dont want some little lifeless comp geek who is board sitting in mommy and daddies basement to destroy!!!!
I posted the information below on another discussion board last week. I thought I would share it with you guys as well.
I support more than 350 PC workstations, 6 servers, a fairly large network, and associated printers, etc. every day. I assure you that the information posted below is good to know and good to do. It is not foolproof as some things called trojan horses and worms are not effected by doing this, but viruses are effectively blocked. I suggest that you continue to use the best virus software you can, but also follow the suggestion below. It may very well save your data.
Most email viruses use visual basic scripts to do their thing. VBS is on your computer as part of Windows in the form of "cscript*****" and "wscript*****". Unless you are writing programs using VBS, you do not need these files on your computer. Do a "find", locate, and delete them. Most viruses that you would receive via email cannot infect your computer if these files are deleted. At least for now, until they change their stragedy again. But it is at least a good way to help protect your computer at this time. In windows 98, "wscript*****" is located in c:\windows, "cscript*****" is located in c:\windows\command, but you can locate them on your computer by using the "find" command.
If you already had a virus on your computer, deleting those files will not get rid of it. The deletions are preventative only. You need to run a virus protection/detection program to detect if/which virus you have and then take action to get it removed. There are several good products available. I am sorta partial to Symantec/Norton because I have used it a lot and it does a good job for me. They also have an excellent website from which you can download updates and fixes. http://www.sarc.com. I just ran one of the "fixit" files "FixKlez" on a workstation this morning and SUCCESSFULLY removed the virus "W32.Klez.E@mm/W32/Klez.H@mm/W32.Elkern.3587/W32.Elkern.4926" . If you don't have a good antivirus program, I recommend that you get one and run it. If you can't get things straightned out, send me an email and we will work through it. Patience offers the best chance of winning. Good Luck with it, and let me know if you need help.

Have you done any maintenance on your computer by deleting "
Temporary Internet files and stuff like that ?
You have to or your computer will slow to a crawl.
THanks Dave, I have McCaffee, but didn't get in on the Free updates.
I'll just have to buy something else.
Since McCaffee never stopped any virus' I'll not buy McCaffed again.
Dennis, Thanks for the suggestion. I delete all the Temp files in my programs.
I also use the 'Find' feature to locate the 'Seven Dirty words' but this time I went an exhausting step further.
I went through all the (*****) files. It took an hour, (there's a jillion of em') but I never found anything that looked suspicious.
I bought a "Cache and Cookie Washer" program thinking it would clean out the unwanted stuff, but that was a waste of money. Just another Revenue producing effort by AOL.
I am in between a rock and a hard spot, and haven't any time left. My Zip drive is at my son's house in St Louis. I need it to copy all these Pictures etc etc, and wont be going to St Louis for two weeks.
So if I dont come up with something easy, I'll just have to wait, and hope my Disk holds out till I cant get it all copied.
What do you look for if you suspect you have the KLEZ?
