Hey guys. I just got my 4.2 F-150 in July and im finally looking to power it up. What Intake woud be the best (Volant, Mac, k&n, or Airaid). And what exhaust do you segest? Thanks.
Hey I don't have either yet, I'm pretty much stuck in the same position as you...but people on FTE have recommened to me the most is MAC. You should just get an exhaust made and buy tips...its a hell of a lot more cheaper.
A good cold air intake like AF1 is made of high quality stainless steel. The inside is smoothed to allow better air flow without the turbulance of the stock system.
The stock system is also very restrictive. It only allows the air coming in from between the bumper and grill surround and some other small places to get into the air box. Plus, by the time the air has made all the sharp turns and bumping into everything it has become hotter due to turbulance.
An air intake system sucks air from somewhat the same place but it is completely open. It can take air from the easiest route. Air still rushes in to the stock location but your also getting air from inside the engine compartment.
Basically, they streamline the air intake to make the air cooler. Colder air burns better and mixes better with fuel.
they can be called cold air, because they can be boxed, and lead to the hole in a fender, which is cooler, or cold in comparrison to, engine air! thats it.
But yes it is worth it, because the filters and tubes are typically bigger than stock
If you have any more questions about what filter to buy, just look for yourself. We have a sticky at the top of the page that has lots of power recommendations for ya.
