I have always wanted to do a complete rebuild on my own but have never had the time to tackle it. I just got my 351 block back from the machine shop and need to buy a carburetor and harmonic harmonic balancer. I am not sure what kind or size to buy of either one. Any help anyone can give me would be appreciated.
I think you will be well served with an edelbrock AFB. I tried both, and nothing against Holley (well, except that dern infernal power-valve!), I just like the AFB better. It just feels crisper and is easier to jet, to me. I'm sure people who know Holley get good service out of them. A 600 CFM might be a little less money, they are very popular. Edelbrock has a nice little kit for about $40 with jets and rods and springs and instructions(!) that can turn any careful reader into a tuner. I recommend it.
As far as the balancer goes...the stock is fine for street applications. I got mine from NAPA for my 400 and it suprised me how much they get for a hunk of steel and rubber. Anyway, as long as it doesn't say "Made in China" on it, you will be OK.
