What tranny do I have?

I plan on doing a drain and fill with filter and gasket shortly on my f150, but I need to know what tranny I have before I go to the parts store and buy a filter. Obviously it an automatic, its in a 77 f150 with a 300 and I know it is at least a 3 speed maybe a 4 don't know since I haven't driven it much yet. What trannies should it have and how can I easily differentiate between them so that I get the right one? Also is regular mercon fluid ok, also what grade? Synthetic worth it for atf or just cause more leaks then gains? Thanks!

If you have a 77 with an auto, you would either have a C4 or a C6. There are identification charts all over the web, just try typing C4 or C6 and you'll see what I mean. And it will be a 3 speed auto that will start in 2nd if you put the shifter in 2, that is for traction on slippery surfaces. As far as tranny fluid goes, it would require Type F automatic transmission fluid, that is readily available at the parts stores.

F150? Most likely a C6. The C4's went into the F100's.

square pan = C4
square pan with a kickout and 17 bolts = C6
