Question Rust and holes

Hi, I have a 1979 f-150. I am fixing it up and I am working on the bed right now. On the floor of the bed there is a ton of rust and there are a few holes. I was wondering what the best thing to do is. How would I cover the holes and what should I do with the rist before I paint it? Thanks!

I would get a replacement floor for the truck box. You can find them pretty easy. Cut out your old floor and weld in the new one, grind the welds smooth and use seam sealer over the welds and in all seams of the box, this will really make it look nice. As for rust, the only way to get a good paint job is to remove it by grinding it out, putting in repair panels, or replacing the panel entirely. There are alot of good fillers and primers out there that will neutrilize rust(after it is ground down) Just make sure you get the rust good or your paint will not last. I would consider sand blasting the box to expose any hidden rust and use a good PPG or Dupont primer...........Have Fun

Not a problem, and make sure you undercoat the bottom of the box after all the work is finished. Also if you have dents in the wheel humps, try to pull them with a nail gun.

After I get finished would it be ok to undercoat it then get it painted? I am getting the truck painted and I was going to paint the bed. Should I undercoat it then get it painted or undercoat it after the paint? Thanks again!

Wouldn't it be best to remove the bed while doing this? That way you can make sure you undercoat the whole thing. How hard is it to remove the bed and how heavy is it? Finally, how many bolts should there be? Looks like mine has 4 but holes for 6.

It does seem like I could do a better job with it off, but I do not know how much it weighs or how many bolts. I will probably check it out. Thanks!

There's a thread somewhere in this forum (can't remember if it came up while doing a search) where the member explained that he slid his bed off onto a stack of tires all by himself. So it is doable. Maybe some of the folks that have done frame up restorations can chime in. I'm also wondering how big of a job it is to take the cab off.

# of bolts depends on the bed length, find em all and remove 'em. don't forget to also disconnect your fuel tank filler (fillers for dual tanks) and also make sure you disconnect your tail light wiring and get it out of the way. get three guys if you want to be careful and lift, these things aren't that heavy, I tipped one off at a junk yard once, it was too beat to save so I just flipped it off the passenger side of the truck.
