Setting timing?????

Replacing the timing chain and tensioners on a 1998 Ford Explorer 4.0 SOHC. There are no timing marks on gears. Anyone with info or suggestions please email or post. Thanks in advance for any help given.

I think you need a special tool (or tools) to hold the cam gears in place...?

timing

You need 4 special tools to do it the easy way. You need a tool that mounts in the valve cover screw holes on one end to hold the shaft in place. Another tool on the other end of the block in the valve cover screw holes to hold the cam sprocket in place. Another tool that screws in the hole in place of the cam chain tensioner to hold tension on the chain sence the chain tensioner will compress when you try to tighten the sprocket bolt and another tool that wraps around the harmionic balancer to hold the #1 cylendar at tdc while tightening the sprocket bolt. I found the kit containing all the tools for about $190 at a place called etools or something like that.

Good Luck
