I am trying to design a winch bumper for my 93 f150. I want to build it myself. The winch is a warn 8274. I don't have a tubing bender. Just an arc welder and some cutting and grinding tools. I have alot of 2x2 square tubing, 2x4 tubing and some plate. Has anyone built one that works and looks good? I am using a warn enforcer bumper for an old dodge and it just doesn't look right. Pics would help alot. Thanks.
Assuming the plate is 1/4 inch, I would drill the plate for the winch bolt holes, then double it up, and bolt it to the top of the frame, once the halves were welded together. Then run a single piece of plate under the frame rails and put the bolts through that so the nuts do not tear through the frame or warp it on a hard pull.
For the bumper, I would make a frame of plate that went around the sides and bottom of the frame and across the front. Then both bolt and weld the 2x4 to that with the 4 inch part horz. so the 2" part stacks up vert.. That way if you hit something, the 2x4x1/8 tubing will crush before the frame gives in. Plus, it will look like a tube bumper.
I would cut 45 degree corners and run it down the fender slightly so it looks like it curves/boxes around. Plus, it will protect the bottom part of the fender from being pushed in if you nick something. On your truck, I do not think there is a brace behind the front bottom of the fender so it will bend in easy if you hit something fairly small.
I forgot to mention I have a winch plate that came with the winch. It is an L shape with holes in the bottom for the mounts. How do I get a hold of Ryan? I want to do this this weekend.
are you going for looks or functionality? personaly i think my winch bumnper looks good and it would take a tractor trailer at 70 mph to bend it. but i am weird also.
I want both function and looks. I need the bumper to go out to the edges and be strong. It also would double as something to stand on then I tune it up.
If you want to contact Ryan, go the sticky at the top of the forum, click on his username, and several options will pop up including sending him an e-mail.

the 8274 has its mounting bolts vertical, not horizontal like yours, so your would take some modifying to work
