Looking for some feed back on the X,have been driving explorer's since 91 and been very happy but the family has grown and the wife says we need more room,What i am looking for is the good and bad points regarding the X from 00-03 with the 7.3,it will be used for long trips coast to coast, very little towing etc, what i am looking for is MPG,how is the I-beam up front holding out,and the ride quality, also which chip would you suggest for every day driving and is there some true about the MPG increase. Thanx Sammy
Welcome to FTE! You'll find everything you'll ever need to know about the X and any other vehicles related to it. As far as the 7.3 is concerned, it's a workhorse that will put out some impressive mileage while working. Around town, mileage is normally 15-16 mpg, on the freeway 16.5-22 mpg, combined city/freeway is about 17-17.2 mpg. As far as ride quality is concerned, we have a saying on FTE about this: "If you want a car, buy a suburban. If you want a truck buy an Excursion". When you first drive one, you may find the ride a little stiff (as opposed to the suburban's car like ride), but you'll get used to it. Aftermarket shocks and tires help the ride quality. The tuners that people on FTE use are the Superchips Microtuner and the Diablo Predator. They provide jaw-dropping power and better fuel mileage (provided your foot isn't always to the floor). There are a few prerequisites (exhuast system, intake kit, and gauges)to accomodate the power increase. These fine details prevent you from destroying your engine, transmission, and turbo. If you're looking for a moderately priced X, I suggest going with a 2002 model. Plenty of great changes were made back then, including a power boost for the 7.3 and a few new interior amenities. All in all, the X is a great travel vehicle with power and room to do whatever you want. I've had mine since I bought it new in 2001, I could never bring myself to sell it; that alone goes to show you how happy I am with mine. Happy hunting!
