Just took a trip from our home here in West Texas (3300ft. alt.) to Alto, NM at around 9,000ft. alt. Drive is just over 4 hours one way. During the drive, I ran 72mph in the 70 zones and 66-67mph in the 65mph zones. In the lower speed zones in the mountains, I usually ran the speed limit or just under. Truck was empty except for me going up there and coming back, I had DW and our two DD's and their luggage.
On the drive up, I averaged just over 15mpg. On the drive back, right at 16mpg (lot of off-throttle coasting on the descent). Also, recently, in - town mileage has been around the 13mpg mark if I am careful. It has seemed to me that each time I have towed our camper and really worked the motor, the mpg's went up a bit. When I bought the truck and drove it home, I was struggling to get 12mpg at 72mph. Needless to say, I am very happy with these results.
Does this motor sound like it is about broken in and mpg leveled off to you guys? When have the mpg gains leveled off for your newer 3V trucks? Mine is an '08 CC SB V10 2WD with a couple mods - Airraid intake, Magnaflow muffler and a Job 2 4x4 air dam. Some say that the Roll-n-Lock bed cover helps too but I don't know how much truth there is to that. Truck now has 9100mi. on it and I run Mobil 1 10-20 oil. Tires are on stock-on-stock 18" wheels with pressure at mfg. spec.
Next weekend I will have another good tow - 1000mi. round trip to East Texas towing our 7,000lb TT. Can't wait to see what mpg's I get!!!
What gear ratio in your truck ? I ask because I get my new 09 this week same truck but 4x4 and long box 4.10 limeted slip auto. Is yours an auto ? I would be very happy to get those numbers, because I had a 2004 6.0L before that got 16 to 18 mpg
