So I was driveing today looking cool and the god dam truck just turned off, its happend 2 before a while back so I just turned it back on and said I'll figure it out when I get home, went on my way then it turn of on the highway! (ahh!) and then 5 or 6 more times, Nearly didn't get home, turning it to the neighborhood it almost did and bogged down but got it to creep out of the way of traffic. I'll post more info when I get a chance to check it out. It put out a memory code 212 Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) 212 indicates a loss of Ignition Diagnostic Monitor (IDM) input to the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) or spark output circuit grounded.
Alldata blows, I think it may be the ignition control module but its (alldata) not helping me with anyway of testing the dam thing short of owning a breakout box....
Possible Causes:
Open harness circuit.
Shorted harness circuit.
Damaged Ignition Control Module (ICM) .
Damaged PCM.
Is vehicle a No Start? No retard, the vehicle starts.
No -- Go to NA3. See: NA3 - Check IDM Circuit Continuity ........
NA3 - Check IDM Circuit Continuity
Key Off.
Disconnect Powertrain Control Module (PCM) . Inspect for damaged or pushed out pins, corrosion, loose wires, etc. Service as necessary.
Install breakout box, leave PCM disconnected.
Disconnect Ignition Control Module (ICM) .
Measure resistance between test pin 4 at the breakout box and Ignition Diagnostic Monitor (IDM) circuit at the ICM vehicle harness connector.
Is resistance less than 5.0 ohms?
So this is where I'm going to need a little help, not owing a breakout can I just test pin #4 or what? Any Ideas any one has at all would be nice....please.
I did it its fine. theres other stuff about checking open circuits and ect. the proved pointless. anyone know what might cause this to happen? How can I check if the ICM is working properly? Trucks undriveable and Unreliable (lol kind of an oxymoron with the 4.9) please help.
Alrights so im at a dead end, to test the ICM I have to test pins 4 and 16 while the truck is running which means I need a breakout box, I may try a "wiggle test" or get an ICM from a junk yard and try it out. Am I heading in the wrong direction here? Is there any thing else I should be checking? Noone has anything in the 87 views of this thread
Check the wiring to and from the SPOUT connector. You can do all the tests that use a breakout box without having an actual break out box. Just back probe the computer harness (don't puncture the wiring insulation though). If you have good continuity on the IDM circuit, it could be the SPOUT circuit. I'd also check to see if the TFI module is working properly.
checked and double checked just about every thing in my truck couldn’t find the problem, one night I was making sure timing was still at stock (10 btdc) and the dam truck turned in to a no-start, would crank and crank but wouldn’t start up, I was baffled I had checked absolutely everything (except for the back probing thing, never figured out how to get around the lil plastic thing covering the connector) I decided to check the battery while cranking before I went inside for the night, told someone to crank it for a second and surprisingly it started right up. It suddenly disappeared just as it had arrived and hasn’t come back since.
