By open headers, do you mean getting rid of all exhaust components except for the deaders?
If so:
UH. LOUD LOUD. Turbo does help cancel out a good bit of the sound waves, but not enough. Not only that, youd dry up every rubber O-ring, seal, grommet, etc. inside your engine bay, and more under the cab. Your engine bay temperature would increase, and probably conaminate your air supply while at idle, and youd loose horsepower (every 5 degrees equals 1 hp). It would probably make it into the cab as well, so you might want to drive with a gas mask (might get pulled over, some old lady might think your a terrorist or something). When you turn off your truck, the cold air on the headers and exhaust valves inside your block will cause the hot metal to crack and will be ruined. In short, DONT DO IT!!!
I ran with no muffler on mine I got hassled by the local cops. it was really loud if I was pulling a load. yes it is illegal in most areas check with local law enforcement. I running headers with flowmasters on 3" exhaust not bad for the power. o yeah I had to down grade I crack my7.3 and bought a 6.9 still got the power though.
Why would you want to do such a thing??? You can stright pipe the mack but I dont see why you would want a open manafold..I dont think they make headers for big rigs..
i don't have a mack truck but wanted to know if it was possible because one of my friends was talking about making his rig louder and since i was on this thread i thought about asking it.I really want to know if open headers on my 350 is illegal and if it will harm the truck. Is there any documents on the web about emmision laws in the state of texas that anybody knows about?
screw headers when you can have lots of boost. if the 7.3 and 6.9 had lower compression the a huge turbo would be a total standard a cross the board. diesels need air and lots of it. if you want to have a loud truck buy a chevy its cheap to replace burnt valves in the 350 then it is in a ford diesel to get a long block from ford or international will run you $6000. I can rebuild a 350 for under a grand.
the only reason I went with headers is I was curious if they would give me more power than a turbo but If I could do it all over again I would buy the banks sidewinder and intercool it.turn up the pump crank the boost and watch out I'd probably be on my 3rd motor too or 4th.
If I had stacks they would probably busted off by now my cab sits about 6'7"(I'd have two nice 6" stacks comming a a foot over the cab) I can barely put it in the garage. I love to do it though that way you don't have to clean soot off the truck or trailer if you put them high enough. straight cut ones will put soot all over the surroundings after they get water in them.
any time you have no exhaust its loud. my brother has a 91 talon Tsi, AWD trurbo that the exhaust fell off of at the downpipe so it dumpped out after the turbo. he was making 4 lbs of boost at idle. and the thing was LOUD and that was only a little 2.0L 4cyl.
