I am going to order an electronic ignition for my 272 this week. The local performance tunner highly recomends the msd pro billet(?) but the summit mag and msd's web site did not list one for the 272. I know the pertronics is cheep but my interest is in quality and performance not cost(to an extent) Any suggestions would be appreciated.
I would go with the msd. summet has them on their web site. Mallory also makes a dissy I think they also make them with a tach drive. I am running a mallory unilight convershion on my 272 with a 58 and newer dissy and it is working very well. Not sitting on the side of the road is worth a few extra $.
I too will be running the MSD as soon as funds allow. Summit has the msd #8383 in stock $369.95 this will fit 272 292 and 312's. I just checked last week.
check out ebay 2477018605 thats my engine that the headers are on
Well I lied, it was the mallory unilite that he recommends. Summit has this part for $249 plus coil. Has anyone ran this and have any input, good or bad?
I'm hoping to order it by Wednesday so I can drool over it before it goes to the shop on Monday. The summit store in Reno is only 300 miles away so I get over night with no additional shipping.

Ben
I didn't run the whole Mallory distributor, but I did run a Mallory Unilite electronic ignition conversion in my 65 Mustang for five years with no problems. It cost me about a hundred bucks and was money well spent. It was still going stong when I sold it...
i'd like to put in my 2 cents about pertronix. i ran one on my 318 Cherokee hybrid, and it was great. on that recommendation my buddy put one on his '74 F100 during his last tune up. in both cases the engines ran better than ever before, it was a breeze to install, and IF something happens to the pertronix, the points/condensor in your glove box can get you home.
on the flip side i replaced the mallory unilite in my '52 with a points distributor back in college because it cratered one day on the way work. i realize its anecdotal, but my limited experience makes pertronix the better choice IMO.
Dover, Go with the unilight and don't look back. They make good stuff. As for the pertronix I tryed one it lasted 2000 miles about 10 times less than a set of points would. Ran better than it ever has for 1500 miles then started to miss. Replaced them with points all problems were gone. maybe I had a bad one. I then installed a mallory unilight conversion and so far I have about 10000 miles on it and working great. They did tell me that the electrical system needed to be tight for it to last, no loose battery connections or bad grounds. Like with any thing, if it is built by man it is going to have problems.
do any of these companies make electric ignition for a 223? This whole points stuff doesnt seem too fun especially when your truck is sittin in your driveway
Yes they do make pertronix for the 223, just give them the number on the plate on the dist housing and they will send you one..............after you give the man $125 CDN.
Well I ordered the unilite full replacement dist. today. Summit said that it should arive tomorrow so I will have the weekend to drool before it goes into the shop monday. It will be nice to have the truck be dependable, hopefully.
