looking for a little understanding, so if you wouldn't mind i'd appreciate your comments:
What's the difference btwn a 3rd Member and a Transfer Case. Which is better to have?
It seems the new 1/2 ton trucks today are going to a front end with 1/2 shafts and with only rubber boots protecting the bearings. How good or bad is this arrangement? It really seems more open to damage, IMHO.
3rd members and transfercases are 2 different animals. The transfer case send power from the tranny to the front and rear axles when in 4wd. 3rd member is just a name for the drop-out centersection of axles like the ford 8" and 9".
Third Members exclusively refer to Rear carriers that are completely removable like the Ford 9" the Toyota whatever size. By Completely removeable, I mean you get the whole deal - Differential housing, Diff, Ring and Pinions and bearings. This is a GREAT feature because it allows you to set-up the gears without having to be under the truck.
Where as with a 8.8" Ford / Dana 44 / Dana 60 / GM Axles etc you have the differential actually bolted INTO the Axle housing.
